Life in Sweden
Sweden is perceived today as one of the most developed countries in the world, as well as an attractive study destination for young people around the globe. Within a few decades Sweden managed to reach the top of the world in terms of innovation, creativity and technological development - all through its people.
Growing through innovation and creativity
Sweden has become one of the most innovative countries in the world through a long tradition in research, critical thinking and openness to foreign influences. The INSEAD Global Innovation Index (GII) places Sweden in second place in 2012 among over 140 countries across the globe. The index measures the extent to which a country has an infrastructure that enhances a creative environment and allows for innovation, as well as the actual output.
Innovation goes hand in hand with creativity and in 2011 Sweden became the most creative country in the world according to a study by the Martin Prosperity Institute. Sweden received the highest Global Creativity Index (GCI) thanks to high talent, advanced technological development and the tolerance to embrace both of them.
Development has to be sustainable
Sustainability and green thinking are part of the Swedish lifestyle. Respect for nature is valued and inherent in most Swedes, which explains Sweden’s clean waters, fresh air and large forest areas. Care for the environment and respect for future generations have turned Sweden into a leader in recycling. Recycled materials are used on a growing scale in the fashion and furniture industries. As well as that, almost 90% of beverage containers are reused.
Safety is a high priority
Safety is a high priority for the Swedish society and the country has come a long way in ensuring a safe environment for its citizens. Public means of transport, parks and paths in the forest as well as city neighbourhoods are places where one can feel safe at any time. International rankings place Sweden among the safest countries in the world and Sweden has been keeping a top position for several years.
Respect for the other
Swedish society provides an open climate where all ideas are welcomed and treated with respect. Openness towards the other and democratic principles are the basis for all human relations in Sweden. An open climate between teachers and students or between employees and employers makes Sweden a friendly place where new ideas are born and developed.
