RUAG Space in Linköping introduced a new student activity during Labour Market Days in Linköping that we have called Brains@RUAG. Brains@RUAG is a student project designed with purpose to establish and develop relationship with the University of Linköping, to provide new solutions and development for the organization and to educate students.

Background
At the student fair in Linköping - LARM in February we implemented Brains@RUAG to the students. The idea was that a mechanical engineer, a technical physics and a business lawyer during one week should work together to find new ideas or concepts to solve a real mechanical problem. The business lawyers role was to examine various aspects of patents.

After the fair, we received applications and started to recruit for the project. Thanks to the good response and good skills among the candidates we were able to put together two teams, consisting of sharp and creative minds, to work parallel with the same problem.

Performance
On Monday morning RUAG presented the problem for the teams. The two teams worked with the same problem during the week, but apart from each other. Every day they had a chance to meet responsible engineers one hour for questions.

Örjan Arulf, Head Engineer at RUAG Space in Linköping thought that he would meet frustrated students, who would think that our problem would be too difficult and demanding to solve. He also thought that a very tight schedule over a week should contribute to some stress but after the first shock the both groups seemed to think that the assignment/task was manageable and worked with impressive self-confidence during the week.

On Friday, the teams reported their results of the week. Besides the two teams, representatives from Linköping University and department managers and engineers from RUAG participated.

The Result
Both teams solved the problem well beyond our expectations. Not everything they presented was new, but it was impressive to see that their various proposals covered most of what had been up internally. More important and more interesting was that the teams presented some completely new ideas which will be exciting to work with.

The project was well established with the involved institutions at Linköping University and the response we got from the University before, during and after the project has been very good. Representatives expressed their appreciation for employers who take initiatives where student and employers meet.

Fredrik Eskilsson and Oskarr Rönnbergs Sjödin in team Cassiopeja give their ideas to solution.

The students were very satisfied with the week and thought it was a fun and rewarding week. The students have received compensation and it is well established in the contract that any solutions that come out of the project belongs to RUAG.

Sounds interesting?
Come and visit RUAG at the fairs next year and maybe you get to participate in Brains@RUAG. Our plan is to work with this project in both Linköping and Göteborg during 2011.
