Residence permits and visas
If you are a EU citizen and you plan to study in Sweden for more than three months, you will need to register your right of residence at the Swedish Migration Board (Migrationsverket). Swiss citizens need to apply for a residence permit if staying in Sweden longer than three months. This needs to be done within the first three months from arriving in Sweden. Citizens of the Nordic countries may live in Sweden without registering at the Migration Board.
If you are not a citizen of the Nordic countries or the EU/EES area and are going to study for longer than three months, you must apply for a residence permit at the Swedish embassy/consulate in your home country. Some foreign nationals must have a visa in order to enter Sweden. To be sure of obtaining your permit in time, you must submit your application as soon as you have received the Notification of Selection Results. Contact the Swedish embassy in your country to check what documentation is required for your application.
Work and study
Students from Nordic and EU/EEA countries have the right to work in Sweden, as well as students from other countries who have obtained a residence permit. Please check with the Swedish Migration Board for more information about the right to work in Sweden. Working and studying at the same time can be quite challenging as full-time studies at Linköping University require 40 hours per week. Also, be aware that opportunities for part-time work in Sweden are limited and that most jobs require knowledge of Swedish.
The Career Service Center at University Linköping offers feedback on your CV and personal letters, guidance and coaching on work and careers.
Apply for residence permit as soon as possible
It takes at least two months for the application to be processed. It is very important that you apply for a residence permit as soon as possible in order to get it on time!
We strongly recommend that you apply before 15 June to ensure that your application will be processed in time.
