Tuition fees - terms of payment
In general, citizens of countries other than EU/EEA and Switzerland are required to pay tuition fees.
1. When to pay
Tuition fee payments are to be made in advance. Normally, the deposit covers one semester at a time.
New students:
If you are a new student about to start your first term at Linköping University, the payment is due on 1 June for the Autumn semester.
Application for residence permit:
The residence permit application process at the Swedish Migration Board can take 3 to 5 months. Your application will not be processed until your tuition has been paid or your status as a scholarship holder confirmed. Therefore, paying as soon as possible gives you better chances to obtain the permit in time.
Scholarship holders:
- If you have been granted a 100% scholarship from Linköping University, you will not receive an invoice. You can apply for a residence permit once you have received your scholarship offer at the end of April.
- If you have been granted a scholarship from the Swedish Institute, the information will be communicated to Linköping University directly, and you will not receive an invoice. Apply for residence permit once you have received your SI scholarship offer.
Enrolled students:
Once you are enrolled, you will need to pay tuition fee for each coming semester in advance.
Deadlines:
| Semester1: | 1 June |
| Semester 2: | 15 December |
| Semester 3: | 10 August |
| Semester 4: | 15 December |
2. How to pay
Enrolled students:
Please refer to the payment information on the right-hand side of this webpage and the invoice. Use the reference from the invoice.
New students:
Admitted students will receive an e-mail with an invoice for the first semester at the end of April.
There are two ways to pay:
- Online payment using a credit card (e.g. VISA, MasterCard). Please use the payment service to the right.
- Payment by bank transfer
Bank transfer can take a long time. Please follow these steps carefully:
1. Inform your bank that the deadline for payment is 1 June and Linköping University must have received your payment by this deadline.
2. Important! The transferred amount must include all and any bank fees. No shortfalls due to exchange fee fluctuations may arise. Linköping University has to receive the amount that is stated in your invoice after the deduction of fees.
3. Payment transaction must include following:
- first name,
- surname,
- application number (from the Notification of Selection results)
Otherwise we cannot match your payment with your application.
Bank information:
Name of bank: Swedbank.
Address: Swedbank 105 34 Stockholm, Sweden.
IBAN: SE58 8000 0890 1192 4339 6570
Account no: 8901-1, 924339657-0
BIC/SWIFT: SWEDSESS
When paying tuition fee from a Swedish bank, use “bankgiro 5050-0016”
3. What is included in the tuition fee
For students on a master's programme, the fee normally covers a workload of 30 credits per semester. For any additional courses beyond 30 credits, there will be an additional fee.
The fee also covers study related issues such as study administration, study and career counselling, student health care, library access, computer labs etc.
Moreover, the fee includes a housing offer, an introduction to the Swedish language (15 credits), an introduction to advanced academic studies and the Swedish State's Insurance for fee-paying students.
Period of study:
Tuition fee is calculated based on number of credits, not number of semesters. Therefore, students who have not completed their studies within the normal period of study have the right to complete their studies in the course of the following academic year without paying extra tuition fees.
Students who complete their studies in less than the normal number of semesters must still pay tuition fees for the full number of semesters.
4. Not included in the tuition fee
Course literature, housing costs, living expenses, etc. You will need approximately 7,300 SEK (see Budget) a month for such expenses.
5. Students who do not pay on time
Admitted students who have not paid their tuition fees for semester 1 on time will not be able to enrol at LiU. Students in semester 1, 2 and 3 who do not pay their tuition fees for the coming semester will no longer be able to enrol for courses or examinations.
6. Leave of absence
Enrolled paying students are subject to the general rules at Linköping University regarding leave of absence. However, paying students must submit an application for leave of absence no later than 14 days prior to payment deadline for the coming semester in order to avoid paying tuition fees.
7. Withdrawal from studies
Paying students are subject to the general rules at Linköping University regarding withdrawal from studies. However, enrolled paying students who wish to withdraw from their studies must submit an application in writing no later than 14 days prior to the coming semester start in order to avoid paying tuition fees for that semester.
8. Refunds
In order to be considered for a refund, a written request with any supporting documentation necessary must be submitted to the Admissions Office.
Address: Linköping University, Admissions Office, SE-581 83 LINKÖPING, Sweden
First-semester students who are not yet enrolled at Linköping University
Students who have paid tuition fees, but who did not qualify for a residence permit and therefore could not enrol at Linköping University can receive a refund of their tuition fees excl. bank charges and administrative costs.
Other cases
In case of serious illness or other extraordinary circumstances, it may be possible to apply for a refund of tuition fees for the semester already commenced.
Written applications for refunds may also be considered in special cases (i.e. in cases where the applicant can prove that Linköping University has not lived up to its obligations).
9. Change in fee paying status
The fee status of a student is assigned during the application process based on submitted documents. If you have been assessed to be a “fee payer”, but claim to be eligible for a change of status to that of a “non-fee payer”, please proceed as follows:
1. Send a formal letter (in writing) to the Admissions Office at Linköping University stating the reason(s) for change in fee status.
Address Admissions Office: Linköping University, Admissions Office, SE-581 83 LINKÖPING, Sweden
2. Enclose documents to demonstrate the means by which you qualify for the non-fee payer status, e.g.:
- a copy of the decision regarding residence permit (from Migrationsverket), where the reason for giving you a residence permit is stated
3. Also include:
- copies of the pages of the passport that show identity, the validity period of the passport and whether the student has permits to be in countries other than the native country.
All documents must be certified. This means that another person must sign their name, print their name and provide their telephone number on each document copy. This person, by signing, is certifying that the copy submitted is an exact copy of the original. Certified copies can be obtained from the copy service in C building on Campus Valla.
The University decides upon change of status and whether any refunds are to be paid out in conjucation with it. If the student is unable to provide sufficient evidence, the fee payer status remains unchanged.
