About Sivakiruthika

Name: Sivakiruthika Natchimuthu
Programme: Master’s in Science for Sustainable Development: Climate, energy and recycling
From: India
Current job: PhD student, Department of Thematic Studies – Water and Environmental Studies (TEMA V), Linköping University

Describe your job and the kind of projects in which you are involved.

My PhD research concerns the exchange of greenhouse gases such as methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide between atmosphere and the water in lakes and streams. Also, I research how these gases counteract the land sink at a landscape level. I'm involved in the project “Landscape Greenhouse Gas Exchange (LAGGE) - Integration of Terrestrial and Freshwater sources and sinks”.

Why did you choose the master’s programme Science for Sustainable development, and why Linköping University?

I became interested in sustainable development and developing a sustainable society after my bachelor’s project on the status of organic farming in my home country. Sweden is one of the few countries in the world which promotes a lot of environmental-friendly initiatives like biofuels, renewable energy etc. Thus, I thought this would be the perfect place for broadening my knowledge in this interesting field. Linköping University is one of the top ranked universities in Sweden and also in the world. In addition, my relatives and friends had told me that Linköping is a beautiful small city and these were additional reasons for choosing Linköping University.

Which were the most useful experiences from your education, from Linköping University and from Sweden?

The exposure that I got through my master’s programme was vast and it is difficult to list all benefits I’ve had. Learning to work in a multicultural setting is one of the most important experiences that I gained from this programme and it is very helpful for my PhD education. I have learnt to be more organised and to think critically about different issues, which is also a valuable asset for me.

What was your experience of studying at Linköping University?

It was a very nice experience of studying in a completely different environment. Before coming to Linköping University I was quite nervous about that, but after coming here I’ve never had a problem in studying or understanding the courses. There was always someone to help me when I had a problem. Most of the learning activities were directed towards analytical/critical thinking which was quiet new to me because I was not trained that way in the Indian education system. It was difficult to follow at first, but I enjoyed doing that later.

Was Linköping University what you expected?

Yes. Friendly professors, nice and big campus, good accommodation facilities and wonderful friends made my stay here wonderful. The only thing that I did not expect was the cold climate. I knew it would be cold, but I never imagined it would be that cold. Coming from a region where the temperature was between 30-40°C most of the year, -28°C was not amusing.

What is your most memorable moment at Linköping University?

The day I defended my thesis successfully was the memorable day at Linköping University. I was quiet nervous about it, but then I was satisfied with the way I handled the questions from my examiner.

Any advice for prospective  students on the master’s programme Science for Sustainable Development at Linköping University?

I would say this is a great programme for someone who is looking to gain great knowledge in climate change issues, climate politics, renewable energy, and a variety of other concepts in sustainable development.
