About Minh
Name: Minh le Kieu
Programme: Master’s in Intelligent Transport Systems
From: Vietnam
Current job: PhD student Queensland University of Technology, Australia
Why did you decide to study Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)?
I chose this topic because I am interested in modern technologies in transportation and besides, studying ITS brings research opportunities for my future career.
Why did you choose to study at Linköping University?
Before joining LiU I read that the university had a strong traffic engineering group. Moreover, the ITS program –provided only by LiU - was pretty attractive.
What was your experience regarding Linköping University?
I think the staff and the professors were really helpful. I was guided by many enthusiastic and proficient professors during my two years of study at LiU. Personally I also enjoyed the environment at campus Norrköping, built similar to a castle lying next to a stream.
Is the programme what you expected it to be?
I did not expect to study any telecommunication courses during the ITS program, but they are helpful for me anyway. On the other hand, the transport-related courses are exactly what I have expected. The knowledge obtained from the ITS programme leads me to the belief that my preparation will help me overcome difficulties and obstacles that obviously exist during research years.
Is Linköping University what you expected?
I expected an international environment and now I am happy that I have many international friends. I often have groupwork assignments with international students from many countries in my courses. We thrive on cultural diversity, sharing of ideas and friendship. Sometimes I imagine the world like a big pizza. It would be just a parched crust if all the people were the same, but with different kinds of cheese, meat or sauces it becomes tasty and interesting.
What do you think of Norrköping?
I spent two years in Norrköping and really enjoyed my time there. Norrköping is a beautiful and peaceful city, especially in summer. As I lived just next to the campus Norrköping, the classrooms and all the stores were just in walking distance, which was very convenient for a lazy guy like me.
Did you enjoy the student life on campus?
I really enjoyed studying at campus Norrköping. The buildings themselves are beautiful, the campus has an excellent location but the thing I liked most was that it was very easy to find a quiet place for studying.
What’s next for you?
I will spend my next 3 years as a PhD student at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia. I have been offered five PhD places: one in Belgium, one in Australia, one in Canada, one in Japan and another one in the U.S, all with full funding. I have decided to choose the Australian University as they are offering me an interesting project and a full three years scholarship. As I chose research for my future career, this is an important step for me. I am grateful that Linköping University in general and the ITS program in particular helped me build a strong background in traffic engineering and a deterministic mind in studying.
