MSc Molecular Genetics and Physiology, 120 credits

Molecular Genetics and Physiology, 120 credits

The programme will not admit students in autumn 2013.

Degree: Master of Science (two years) with a major in Biology
Teaching language: English

The Molecular Genetics and Physiology master’s programme focuses on eukaryotic molecular genetics and physiology, with particular emphasis on how this relates to evolution, development and regulation.

The programme is divided into a first year of mandatory courses and a second year centered on the degree project in a laboratory setting and a course in writing and presentation techniques. The mandatory courses cover areas such as molecular genetics, bioinformatics, molecular physiology, behavioural neurobiology, functional genomics and gene expression analysis with the aim of broadening students’ understanding of biogenetic systems.

Courses are taught using a multitude of formats, including regular lectures, laboratory work and seminar discussions. The laboratory classes utilize powerful biological model systems such as Arabidopsis, yeast or chickens to illustrate modern concepts of molecular genetics and physiology.
Year one and two are linked by a continuous seminar course in Current Concepts in Life Sciences, which introduces students to the current, rapidly evolving research in molecular genetic mechanisms underlying complex biological processes. This course involves research articles and research lectures by prominent guest speakers.
The key part of the programme is the one-year degree project where students apply their theoretical and methodological knowledge in practice. The aim of the thesis project is to define a research goal, carry out the experimental project and produce a written synthesis of the data generated in relation to the current knowledge within the field. The assignment, chosen in collaboration with the project supervisor, is a qualified research task and includes training in specific methodology. The degree project is conducted in a research laboratory, either at Linköping University, in industry or in the public administration sector.

The Molecular Genetics and Physiology master's programme is designed to prepare students for careers in industry such as pharmaceutical or biomedical research, development or production companies, public sector in areas such as forensic science or academia through further study on a doctoral programme.
