My name is Mikaela, I´m 25 years old and I´m about to wrap up my first year of studies at the Master´s Program in Organic Synthesis/Medicinal Chemistry at Linköpings University.

During the first three years of chemistry studies at the university I realised that the courses in organic chemistry were stimulating. They offered interesting theory as problem solving in terms of writing mechanisms. Then there was the practical work at the lab, which often offered a challenge but at the same time a lot of fun. This is why I chose organic chemistry!

The lectures in the master treat the theory which provides the knowledge needed to plan and perform synthetic work in the lab. The master also includes some biochemistry and medicinal chemistry, which gives a broader perspective of possible applications of organic synthesized molecules. The studies in the master´s programme are focused on independent work.  This includes the working in the lab where you start to plan your own work to a greater extent, with the help of supervisors and articles.

There are good opportunities to do the master´s thesis in one of the research groups at the university where you will get the chance to work with an on-going research project.
