The Road to Hollywood Goes Through Norrköping

Students from the Advanced Computer Graphics master programme now have a unique exciting chance of doing their master thesis in the field of film and video special effects. Linköping University (LiU) is the first non-American university accepted as a member of Sony Imageworks academic network IPAX.

Sony Imageworks is one of the largest companies in Hollywood working in the special effects field. Spider-Man 3, Beowulf, I am Legend, and Surf’s Up are part of the list of recent famous movies on which Sony Imageworks worked with.
The aim of IPAX is to strengthen the cooperation with outstanding academic programmes for bringing up a new generation of talents in the field of film and video special effects. Until now only some of the most famous American universities, such as Stanford and MIT, were members of this network. Membership in IPAX opens every year for the possibility of master students doing their final thesis at Sony. This cooperation creates the possibility for students to work with special effects and simulation of complex phenomena such as water, smoke, fire, clothes, hair and skin.
Some of our previous students have participated in the development of simulations of sand for Spider-Man 3, fire for Ghostrider, and waves for Surf’s Up. It was the positive experience of our students and the recognized research at our department that increased Sony’s interest in having LiU as a member of IPAX.
