Cultural Encounter. Representation of the Other in Fiction, 7,5 credits
After completion of the course the student should be able to
- identify and discuss mechanisms of exclusion, such as othering and the use of stereotype, in selected fiction portraying cultural difference and intercultural experiences.
- analyse literary texts using terms and perspectives borrowed from post-colonial literary theory.

Specific admission requirements: Applicants must, by the closing date for application, hold a bachelor's degree/kandidatexamen (equivalent for example a professional degree) of at least 180 ECTS credits, including a 15 ECTS credit degree paper or equivalent.
A major (at least 90 ECTS credits, 3 semesters of full-time study) in one of the following subjects: Comparative Literature, General Linguistics, English, French, German, Spanish, or Swedish, and approximately two semesters of full-time study in another subject relevant to the course is required, including a paper corresponding to approximately 10 weeks of study (15 credits).
Documented knowledge of English equivalent to Engelska B/Engelska 6; i.e. English as native language or an internationally recognized test, e.g. TOEFL (minimum scores: Paper based 575 + TWE-score 4.5, and internet based 90), IELTS, academic (minimum score: Overall band 6.5 and no band under 5.5), or equivalent.
