Speech and Language Pathology
Exchange students can study courses at the Speech and Language Pathology programme for one or two semesters.
Students with good Swedish skills will be integrated into the normal programme curriculum. Students with limited or no knowledge of Swedish can study some of the courses at advanced level. Clinical placements may need to be adapted depending on language requirements. All exchange students can undertake degree project work at advanced or undergraduate level.
Orientation week
Every semester at the Faculty of Health Sciences starts with a compulsory Orientation Week. You need to be present for the duration. This programme introduces international students to the Swedish health care system, and provides information about practice in clinics and health care centres and working with Swedish patients.
The Orientation Week is designed to help exchange students gain as much as possible from their studies at the Faculty of Health Sciences.
The Orientation Weeks 2013/2014 will be held
- 16-23 August for the autumn semester (Friday to Friday)
- 10-17 January for the spring semester (Friday to Friday)
Exchange students with good Swedish skills can study the following courses:
Courses taught in Swedish, undergraduate level
Congenital and acquired speech, language and swallowing difficulties, adults, 15 credits
Spring semester. This course is offered during the fourth semester of the programme and includes basic concepts in neurology and assessment methods in acquired speech, language and swallowing disorders. The course includes clinical practice.
Speech, language and swallowing disorders in children with disabilities, 15 credits
Spring semester. This course is offered during the fourth semester of the programme, and includes an overview of the common causes associated with speech, language and swallowing disorders in children in habilitation care. The course includes clinical practice.
Fluency Disorders, 4.5 credits
Fall semester. The course is offered during semester seven of the programme and includes an overview of different speech problems affecting speech flow in children and adults.
Courses taught in Swedish, advanced level
Neurologpedics in adults, 15 credits
Autumn semester. This course is offered during the seventh semester of the programme and aims at a deeper understanding of neurological impairment and its consequences for the individual. The course includes clinical practice.
Speech and language disorders in exceptional circumstances, 18 credits
Spring semester. This course is offered during the sixth semester of the programme and aims at a deeper understanding of speech ang language disorders in children including children with additional difficulties such as hearing impairment or craniofacial anomalies. The course includes clinical practice.
Courses taught in English
Deviant voice function II, 22,5 credits
Autum semester. This course is offered during the fifth semester of the programme and is an in-depth study of deviant voice function and acoustic and physiological correlates in children and adults. The course includes clinical practice and an inter-professional course: Health, Ethics and Learning II.
Freestanding courses in English
Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Rehabilitation - An International Course, 7.5 credits
Autum semester 2013. The course is interprofessional and provides a teamwork perspective on rehabilitation. Under-graduate level.
Assessment and analysis of deviant speech, 7.5 credits
Autumn semester 2013. Master’s level. The course provides in depth knowledge regarding theories and assessment of deviant speech. Different intervention methods and the evidence base will be discussed.
Disability, Communication and Cognition, 7.5 credits
Spring semester 2013. Master's level. In cooperation with Department of Behavioral Sciences and Learning, IBL.
Quality Improvement and Learning in Clinical Practice, 4.5 credits
The course is given twice a year the first two weeks of the semester (after the Orientation week). Full-time study.
Research Projects
Students may work on individual research projects at undergraduate or advanced level during part of the semester. The length of these projects will vary depending on student needs and supervisor availability. Students acquire 1.5 credits for each completed of full time studies.
