Visa and Residence Permit
When you have been accepted by Linköping University as an exchange student, you should begin preparing for your stay in Sweden.
If you need a visa, apply for it at the nearest Swedish embassy or consulate as soon as you have received the letter of admission. It takes roughly three months for the application to be processed.
EU/EEA and Swiss Citizens
Citizens of the EU/EEA need to register for the right of residence in Sweden. Citizens of Switzerland need to register for a residence permit if their study period is longer than three months. This needs to be done within three months of arriving in Sweden.
Non EU/EEA Citizens
If you are not a citizen of the Nordic countries or the EU/EEA and plan to study for longer than three months, you must apply for a residence permit at the Swedish embassy or consulate in your home country. Please note that the residence permit application process will not begin at the Swedish Migration Board until your tuition fee for the first semester has been paid. The permit or visa must be entered in your passport before your arrival in Sweden.
You must prove that you have been granted university/college admission in Sweden. You must also prove that you have enough money to support yourself throughout the planned study period, with a minimum amount of currently SEK 7,300 per month (amount valid 2011) for ten months of the year. If you plan to study for two years you will thus need SEK 7,300 for 20 months, which sums SEK 146,000.
For a stay of less than three months, some foreign nationals must have visas in order to enter Sweden. A list of those nationalities requiring entry visas is available on the website of the Swedish Migration Board.
To be sure of obtaining your permit in time you should submit your application at least eight weeks prior to your departure for Sweden.
