Insurances
Arrange your health insurance and insurance against loss and damage before you leave your home country, and check carefully what it covers, whether or not you are eligible for special repatriation, etc. European Union citizens should get the European Health Insurance Card from their national social security authority.
Social insurance
If you come from an EU/EEA country, you are entitled to use the public medical services on the same basis as Swedish citizens for urgent medical care. In order to be eligible, you must be registered at a social insurance office in your home country and have a valid European Health Insurance Card, which will be issued upon request by your national social security authority. If you don't have this card, e.g. for a doctor's appointment, expect to pay around 1.700 SEK.
Sweden has reciprocal agreements for public medical benefits with Australia, Algeria and Quebec in Canada. Students from these countries need only to show their passport and a certificate from the social insurance office in their home country. For the reciprocal agreement to apply, the need for medical care must arise during, not prior to, the stay in Sweden.
If you have a residence permit for more than one year, you can register with the civil registration authorities at the local Tax Office Board. This registration will entitle you to the same medical treatment benefits as Swedish citizens. You need to visit the Tax Office in person and must take your passport with you. You will be given a personal identity number, personnummer, made up of your date of birth plus four additional digits. Allow some time for your application to be processed.
Please note that regulations for medical care do not apply to dental care. In most cases foreign students are not entitled to subsidized dental treatments, no matter if they are registered as residents or not, and will have to pay the total cost of a treatment.
The Swedish Social Insurance Agency, Försäkringskassan.
Students who will stay in Sweden for a period that is shorter than one year are not entitled to the same welfare benefits as those who reside here. It is therefore important that you have good insurance cover when you travel to Sweden.
Personal Injury Insurance
All students in Sweden, registered in the Student Records System (Ladok) are covered by personal injury insurance taken out by the Swedish National Board of Student Aid (CSN) and paid for by Linköping University.
This insurance is valid only during study-related hours spent at the university or on work placements and when moving directly to and from the accommodation in Sweden and the university or placement.
It is very important that you obtain complementary insurance before leaving for Sweden.
It is also a good idea to arrange for a dental check-up before leaving home.
Travel and Home Insurance
You also need travel insurance that covers your travel to and from Sweden and the time you spend in the country prior to registration for studies at Linköping University, or after your courses have finished, and insurance to protect your personal belongings.
FAS+ Insurance for Fee-paying Students
Linköping University has signed the Swedish States Insurance for fee-paying students with property cover (FAS+). The insurance applies to students from non EU/EEA countries who shall pay tuition fees for their education in Sweden. The insurance includes cover for emergency medical and emergency dental care, home transport cover, accident cover, property cover, liability cover and legal expenses cover.
