Moving out
There are a lot of things you need to do before moving out of your room. To make it easier for you we provide you with this list of things that has to be done. If anything is unclear, please talk to the Exchange Student Coordinators.
1. Cancel your internet, fixed phone line and parking lot
If you had a fixed phone line, an internet connection or a parking lot, don't forget to cancel it! The easiest way of paying the last month's bill is to contact the provider and ask how much you owe them. It is a lot easier and cheaper to pay it while in Sweden than from abroad. If you prefer to pay it from abroad you have to give the provider of the service your home address.
2. Get your room in order
The room must of course be thoroughly cleaned. It is easy to forget corners where dust and dirt are gathered. See the cleaning instructions below. Please note that if there are any complaints on your cleaning when the inspection is made there will be a deduction made on your deposit for the costs of the cleaning company.
Equipment
See to that everything belonging to the room is in the room for the inspection, i.e. furniture and the doors if you removed them.
Inspection
An inspection of your room will be done once you have moved out. The inspectors check that everything is clean and in good condition. You are liable for the costs for any misuse (damages to the floor, holes in doors and broken windows) and/or extra cleaning.
Cleaning
Here are some tips for the cleaning with hints on the most common mistakes of things that students tend to forget.
The bathroom
- The drain in the floor (under the bathtub or in the shower) must be cleaned. You may have to remove the front of the bathtub to reach it.
- The underside of the sink is easily forgotten.
- The toilet has to be spotless.
The room
- All carpets have to be removed.
- The radiators have to be cleaned from dust, do not forget the backside.
- Painted areas have to be cleaned from dust. This includes the frames around the windows, doors and the skirting boards.
- The windows have to be polished. Do all sides, including between the glasses. You also have to clean the wooden parts of the window.
- Clean the compartments and the drawers in the closets.
- Clean the doors, remember the top of the door!
The kitchen
If you are living in a flat you also need to clean the kitchen. Remember to clean all the cupboards from breadcrumbs and dust as well as refrigerator and the freezer, which must be free of ice. The oven and the fan (take away the filter and clean it) have to be free from grease and other dirt. Do not forget to pull out the oven to clean behind it. Avoid leaving greasy spots on the doors of the cupboards.
3. Hand in the keys
You have to return both copies of the keys to Catarina Lorin (NOT Studentbostäder!) when you move out. If we do not get the original keys back we will have to charge you for the bolt change, this can cost up to 2000 SEK. If you made any extra copies you have to hand them in as well. If you move out when the office is closed you can leave the keys in an envelope in the mailbox to the left of the entrance of Origo building. Remember to put your name and your address on the envelope. As well as addressing it to:
Catarina Lorin
International Office, D-building
4. Send us your bank information
If you have not sent in your bank information to us, you need to do so in order to get your deposit back. The information we need is the following.
Bank’s name:
BIC/SWIFT:
Bank’s address:
IBAN:
(for non-European countries the bank account number (instead of IBAN) is sufficient)
You yourself have to be the account holder!
It might take up to eight weeks, counting from the end date of the contract, before you get your deposit back. The amount returned is of course dependent upon if your cleaning passed the inspection, if we got the right keys back etc.
Click here to send your bank information
You do NOT have to cancel the contract with LiU since when you signed the contract you also decided on an end date. Only if you wish to CHANGE the end date you need to come see us.
