Reinventing higher education
Being innovative and offering knowledge truly in demand has been the guiding-star of LiU ever since the start in the late 1960s. This makes for popular study programmes—and students much sought after by employers.
Linköping University has reinvented higher education in Sweden. We are famous for creating study programmes that give valuable cross-disciplinary knowledge. For example combining medicine and engineering, in order to understand and further develop life-saving technology. Or integrating economics, law and languages, to equip students for careers as international company lawyers.
LiU has often been first, as with the Master of Science in Industrial Engineering and Management. Critics asked themselves what would become of these students, caught between economics and technology. Today we know where to find them—in top management. The Industrial Engineering and Management programme is offered at several universities and is one of the most popular of all Master of Science in Engineering programmes in Sweden.
We question old truths, choose our own path and do the things we believe in. For us, it is not just about educating for today’s society, but for tomorrow’s as well. This influences both content and form. LiU was first to let future doctors assume responsibility for their learning process through problem-based learning, PBL. Now the medical education at LiU is the best in Sweden, whether you ask the students themselves or international experts.
One important reason for LiU’s success is the close dialogue with employers and society. For example, in the autumn of 2010, the first students began the new programme Air Traffic and Logistics in Norrköping. LiU has developed this programme in close collaboration with LFV, the public enterprise for air navigation services, that will recruit most of its air traffic controllers from the programme. In 2011, we also launched brand new teacher education programmes.
National surveys show that Linköping University has the highest employment rate for new graduates among Swedish comprehensive universities. We are proud of this and want to retain this strong standing by continuing to break new ground in the world of education.
