1. General questions
1.1. When will the Commencement Ceremony take place?
See Future ceremonies or contact Master of Ceremonies Karin Lohm.
1.2. Can I bring my children?
The solemn ceremony is unsuitable for small children. People are there to celebrate and can easily be annoyed by children moving about, talking or crying.
At the banquet children and grown-ups participate on equal terms. This means the same food, table setting, etc. Parents decide whether their children would enjoy the party or not. Children and young people are always seated close to their parents.
2. Dress code
2.1. What to wear?
The research associates (Promovendi) attire is formal (högtidsdräkt). Males wear tails, tailcoat and a white tie, with black socks and shoes. Females wear a long formal evening dress in the colour of their choice. Other types of formal wear may be suitable, please consult the Master of Ceremonies.
At the banquet the guests wear either full dress or a dark suit. Ladies accompanying gentlemen in tails wear evening dresses, while those in the company of gentlemen in suits may choose a shorter dress. As for children and young people, boys often wear just a white shirt with a tie and dark trousers and shoes, while young girls may wear a dress in the length of their choice.
2.2. Where to rent clothing?
Try the phone book under "Kläder - Uthyrning" (Clothes – for rent). Call well in advance! There are many white tie events in May, for example.
3. Banquet
3.1. Can I order special food, e.g. vegetarian?
You can order special food if you’re a vegetarian, a vegan, allergic or sensitive to a particular food. We will not provide special alternatives for younger people.
3.2. Is there a non-alcoholic alternative?
Non-alcoholic wine or mineral water will be served. Table water is provided for all.
3.3. What are the seating arrangements?
At the banquet you will be seated with your guests and colleagues from the same department or faculty. If you have any special requests these should be presented in writing to the Master of Ceremonies.
4. The Ceremony
4.1. Where do I get my doctoral hat?
Doctors of philosophy in science, medical science or business and economics will need a hat for the ceremony. You can borrow one from a friend or colleague or buy one from Hattmakeri Anderson & Co Sweden AB, where the hatter Marie Fredsberg Lindström can be reached at 0706-52 1802. She has fittings scheduled before every ceremony, announced by the Master of Ceremonies. Ordering the hat from the hatter is always cheaper than doing it e.g. via a store. The hat is hand-made and needs to be ordered well in advance!
The hat has a gold-coloured metallic emblem. Each faculty has its own emblem: Health Sciences, Arts and Sciences and the Institute of Technology. N.B. there’s an emblem for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences; the doctor receives a wreath during the ceremony, but may wear a hat following this moment.
4.2. What’s the price of a doctoral hat?
As at the time of writing, (7 October 2011) the price of a doctoral hat is SEK 4,875 including VAT.
4.3. Is a doctoral ring required?
The doctoral ring is by no means obligatory. Doctors may acquire and wear one if they wish. Only honorary doctors receive a ring at the ceremony. The doctoral ring can be ordered e.g. from Guldsmedjan, Bokhållaregatan 2, Linköping, phone 013 - 12 03 65, or Hallbergs Guld, Storgatan 29, Linköping, phone 013 - 12 00 22. Prices vary. There’s a ring for each faculty: Health Sciences, Arts and Sciences and the Institute of Technology.
4.4. When do I receive my diploma and what does it mean?
The diploma is only presented at the Commencement Ceremony, as proof of the conferment. Only those people participating in the ceremony will receive a diploma.
4.5. Can I bring guests to the ceremony?
A ticket is required for admission to the ceremony that takes place in the concert hall. Tickets are free and may be ordered through a list provided by the Master of Ceremonies. Your order should be placed before the date indicated in the invitation. Guests should take their place no later than 15 minutes before the start of the ceremony, which is estimated to take about 2 hours. Private photography is permitted from the respective seats. We ask you to abstain from using loud or bulky cameras. There will be photo opportunities during and after the ceremony.
Children rarely enjoy the ceremony. Children moving about or talking may disturb the guests. Try to arrange for a babysitter!
