Neutron scattering, a powerful matter probe - Maja Hellsing, Uppsala university

Seminar - The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology
Neutron scattering is an excellent technique for studying a wide range of materials, such as soft matter, hydrogen in matter, thin films and magnetic structures. Both buried interfaces and bulk structures can successfully be investigated as neutrons are highly penetrating. Yet it is a gentle probe that will cause minimal sample damage. The technique gives information of materials on the length scale of atomic up to sub-micron size. Neutron scattering is a nuclear interaction, which makes it particularly sensitive to light elements. Contrast variation through isotopic substitution can be used to highlight specific components in complex systems.

Strategies for handling power relations in academia

Seminar - Linköpings universitet
Academia is full of explicit and implicit power relations: For instance, as teachers, we decide whether our students pass or fail a course; as Ph.D. students, we are dependent of our supervisors; of getting funding for our research; or we may have influence on who is being employed or promoted. None of us can entirely stay outside this net of power relations. This fall’s second Thematic Forum is dedicated to a discussion about how one can handle these power relations.

Excitable Writing...

Conference - Tema Genus
2014-12-08 -- 2014-12-10 Trans_forming academia_art_activism through intersectional trans_versal, trans_feminist politics of performativity. The conference will gather academic scholars, PhD students in particular, artists and activists. Excitable writing encompasses the problems connected to academic knowledge production and writing. In academia, writing is often seen as an instrumental add-on, instead of understood as an integrated part of research and learning processes - a part which can sustain processes of disruption and resistance to inherent discrimination structures, powerful conventions and rituals, but which can also prolong exclusions and protect elitist practices
