Lectures with John Durham Peters

Lecture - Linköpings universitet
2014-04-17 12:00 -- 2014-04-25 12:00 We hereby invite you to participate in two lectures with professor JOHN DURHAM PETERS at Campus Norrköping on April 24, 2014. John Durham Peters is the A. Craig Baird Professor at the University of Iowa, currently serving as The Helsingin Sanomat Foundation Fellow at the Collegium for Advanced Studies, the University of Helsinki. His research platform is in Communication and Media studies but his expertise and writing extends well into several adjacent areas such as Philosophy, Political science, History, Cultural theory, and Digital studies. John Peters is a prolific cultural critic and a leading international scholar on, among other things, communication and media theory (both the American and German varieties), the history of communications, critical theory, audiality and the voice, communication and ethics, historical record and memory, media and witnessing, etc. He is the author of more than 100 scholarly articles as well as several books, among them Speaking Into the Air. A History of the Idea of Communication (1999), Courting the Abyss. Free Speech and the Liberal Tradition (2005) as well as the forthcoming book which is titled The Marvelous Clouds. Understanding Media Between Nature and Culture (all from The University of Chicago Press). Peters is without doubt in the very forefront of the most exciting developments in contemporary communication and media studies. Recently, Peters have started to explore the Sea and the Clouds in terms of understanding them as infrastructural media situated between nature and culture, thus re-linking two dimensions of communication that are often - and often also for good reasons - separated: communication as media and communication as transport. In this approach he is developing ideas both from Harold Innis and Friedrich Kittler. In his lectures at ISAK, Campus Norrköping, John Peters will explore his interest in the interdisciplinary study of the digital atmosphere. Clouds as media are new, but yet, perhaps not that new after all - as always in the work of John Peters, there are eloquent allusions and references to the sphere of religion as reflected in some of his article titles: "Witnessing"; "Community and Communication"; "Searching in the Time of God and Google". Welcome to participate in the following events: ARE CLOUDS MEDIA? Open lecture for students and faculty on April 24, 10-12 in Room K3 (Kåkenhus, Campus Norrköping). THE PROBLEM OF DIGITAL OBSOLESCENCE Research seminar for researchers, PhD- and Masters students on April 24, 13-15 in Room Tvärsnittet (at Kopparhammaren, Kungsgatan 56, Entry C, Third floor). For the seminar there will be a text available in advance, please notify me if your want a copy of this text. These lectures are arranged by KSM (Culture, Society and Media Production) and Tema Q/Culture and Society (both parts of ISAK, Campus Norrköping).
Location: 24/4 10-12, Sal K3 (Kåkenhus), Campus Norrköping

Internationell Conference - Life Matters

Conference - Tema Genus
2014-05-26 14:30 -- 2014-05-28 18:00 This conference aims to delve into exactly that shape-shifting plasticity of life by intersecting it with the phenomena of sex, sexuality, affect, and control. We want to pose the question both of how conceptions of life are nuanced or altered through various understandings of those phenomena, and how they themselves are clarified or mutated by interpretations of life. Enmeshing these concepts should create productive tensions, which may have the effect of destabilizing the supremacy of the incommensurable notion of life itself as a non-negotiable starting point. This entanglement and tension is of great significance, as it affects our most basic insights about what it means to be human and helps us to expose the ways in which the concept of life is politicized.
