Sweden second in new Australian ranking

Sweden as a destination for higher education was only beaten by the United States in the U21 Ranking of National Higher Education Systems made by researchers at the University of Melbourne.
Traditional rankings tend to only look at research excellence at the individual universities, this instead takes in the entire higher education system and how well it meets the needs of society.

Norwegian warning for dubious journals

Nearly 200 dubious journals has been removed from the Norwegian Association of Higher Education Institutions (UHR), the list of journals that give points for the publication, which then form the basis for research grants. The offer of rapid publication for payment has come to the Norwegian scientists from countries including Nigeria, USA, Croatia, New Zealand, Singapore and Austria and publishers seem to monitor the universities' web information on current disputations, claims Universitetsavisa.no.

Davide Sangiovanni, a graduate student in thin film physics at the Department of Physics and Measurement Technology, Biology and Chemistry, won this year's Graduate Student Award in gold when ICMCTF conference was held in San Diego, USA. Sangiovanni received the award for his work on how the strength of thin films of metal nitride can be improved. He took home the gold in tough competition with a German and an American graduate student.

Mikael Ottosson, Department of Thematic Studies - Technology and Social Change, has received Jan Häckners bioenergy scholarship for his research on the forest industry and bioenergy. In his thesis 2011, Mikael Ottosson describes how the forest industry went from scepticism to full acceptance of renewable energy and biofuels. He received the scholarship because he "in a commendable manner disseminated his research outside the academy and to a broader audience in the energy field." Jan Häckner was the Swedish Bioenergy Association (Svebio) executive director during the period 1987-1995.

HSV criticism of LiU admissions

The Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (HSV) criticized LiU following a report claiming LiU were deficient in their management of admissions for later medicine semesters. The Faculty of Health Sciences (HU) had not provided clear information as per required for admissions nor have they given correct reasons for refusals. One applicant felt discriminated against. HU took immediate action and HSV has therefore closed the case.

The streamlining of management at LiU won the award for best entry to the 2012 Change Project and the award was presented at the Change Management Forum. LiU’s HR department initiated the project. By breaking up the organizational structures and creating smaller work groups, LiU has improved the efficiency and benefited from higher employee satisfaction.
