Digital pathology receives Vinnova support
Pathology is central to health and medical care, not least to cancer patients, yet the field today faces serious challenges due to an excessive workload. The digitalisation of microscopy images opens up new possibilities.
A consortium led by the Centre for Medical Imaging and Visualisation (CMIV) at Linköping University (LiU) has just been granted Vinnova (Sweden’s Innovation Agency) funding for research and development in image-based pathology. The aim is to create new, efficient workflows and IT tools, partly through advances in image analysis and visualisation.
In addition to CMIV, the consortium includes:
- County councils in Östergötland, Jönköping, Kalmar and Gävleborg
- Swerea IVF Research Institute
- Sectra, a medical technology firm
The grant of just over SEK 9 million comes from Vinnova’s call for “Challenge-driven innovation”, and the project is one of 30 granted funding in competition with projects from all over the country.
Researchers at Linköping University are also involved in two other projects granted funding, with the Acreo Research Institute as the principal applicant.
The project titled “New platforms for communication between mobile telephones and printed smart labels” is aimed at developing green communications solutions for the Internet of the future. This by expanding the possibilities of smartphones using smart and dynamic labels capable of collecting information. The project proposal lies within the developing area of “the Internet of things” and is a collaboration that includes Linköping University, Printed Electronics Arena and a number of large companies in the telecom and packaging industries.
The project titled “Online sensor systems for resource-efficient water management” is aimed at developing innovative sensor solutions and services for efficient and safe water management. Assuring good water quality is a major global challenge requiring a broad approach.
The project therefore brings together advanced technology skills with knowledge of different drinking waters and industrial conditions. The participating LiU researchers are specialists in sensor technology and medical microbiology.
