LiU in the top 100 in new ranking
Linköping University is among the world's top 100 universities under the age of 50 according to the British Times Higher Education, THE.
Times Higher Education publishes one of the three most influential global university rankings (the other two are the UK based QS and the Chinese so-called Shanghai list). One of the criticisms of these lists is that they focus on and in many ways measure age and wealth; they do not capture the great dynamism of the sector. THE has now created a ranking of the world’s best universities under the age of 50, partly in response to the criticism. On this list LiU can be found at number 59.
“It's a position we should be proud of and a confirmation that we maintain a high international standard”, said vice-chancellor Helen Dannetun.
Where the traditional top-100 lists are entirely dominated by American universities this new ranking paints a much more diverse picture. The list is topped by Korean Pohang University and among the top five are two more from Asia. Europe and Australia are also well represented on the list. In addition to LiU there are two more Swedish universities on the list: Umeå at number 23 and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences(SLU) at 27.
However, even in this group age is of significance. Out of the 58 universities that are ahead of 40-year old LiU, 42 are older. Of the 16 young universities appearing before LiU, six are from Asia and three from Australia.
