Language workshops now in English
For several years LiU has offered language workshops to help students with their Swedish. Now help is also available in English.
Students come to the language workshops when they experience difficulty writing in English. They can receive tutoring, for example when they are going to write a thesis or a take-home exam. They can also receive help practising their oral presentations, both in groups and individually. Until now, the language workshops were offered to Swedish students. However, since the beginning of 2012, the language workshops have also been available in English.
“So far, mostly international Master’s students have come to us for help with their theses. However all students are welcome, including Swedes in need of help with English,” says Birgitta Lönning (pictured), coordinator for the English language workshops at Campus Valla, University Hospital, and in Norrköping.
Even though English skills are obligatory for both Swedish and international students, a large number of them need extra help.
“We see many students who experience difficulty writing long texts, like essays for example. Often their grammar and vocabulary is inadequate. We want to help our students to help themselves, and get them to pinpoint where they are need help so they can work on their texts themselves. So we don’t do any proofreading or do the work for them,” says Birgitta Lönning.
She emphasises that it is a good idea for students to contact the language workshop in the early stages of the writing process.
“Teachers and tutors can often tell quite early on if someone has a problem with their English, and can inform them that help that is readily available. These days most universities and colleges offer language workshops in English.”
