Background

After getting a B.A. from Stockholm University, I went on to do post-graduate work at Uppsala University, receiving a Ph.D. in General Linguistics in 1981; I was subsequently employed at Uppsala as forskarassistent (assistant professor). In 1985, I became a docent and lektor (associate professor) at the Department of Linguistics of Stockholm University, where I eventually became full Professor of General Linguistics and Head of Department. In 2000, I was appointed Professor of Language and Culture at Linköping University, within the newly formed Graduate School in Language and Culture in Europe, whose director I was from 2000 through 2012.

Since 2009, I am also Gastprofessor in Skandinavistik at Universität Zürich.

From 2002 through 2008, I was Dean of the Faculty of Educational Sciences at Linköping University. I also served as Chair of the committee recruiting LiU post-doc research fellows. From 2007 through 2012 I was head of ASK (Language and Culture), one of the five divisions of the Department of Culture and Communication.

I frequently serve as ‘opponent’ (faculty examiner), on committees, as evaluator, and as mentor.
