More about Forum Securitatis

Forum Securitatis is a multidisciplinary graduate school in the field of security in society and crisis management. Forum Securitatis is managed by the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) and Linköping University (LiU) and is financed jointly by VINNOVA (The Swedish Agency for Innovation Systems), FOI and LiU.

Forum Securitatis provides education and practical training within the topics of security in society and crisis management. Security in society includes not only systems and methods for protection of important societal functions including infrastructures, but also studies of more complex situations where new surveillance technologies may impact on personal integrity. Crisis management includes technologies and methods for supporting society in preventing crises, during rescue operations, and for post-incident normalisation at local, regional, and national levels.

All students participating in the School are registered at and examined by their respective university departments. In order to be accepted into Forum Securitatis, the candidate must be registered as a graduate student, and must take part in the courses and activities of the School according to its requirements. An contract of acceptance is made on the individual level between the student, the student’s ordinary supervisor and Forum Securitatis after a formal application procedure.

Forum Securitatis provides a range of activities which complement the student’s normal courses. Forum Securitatis is a new School, and activities will be successively broadened and deepened.

Courses

Formal courses are of different types. These courses are open to students at the national level.
The courses are developed to cover domain-, depth., multidisciplinary as well as soft skill aspects:

  • Domain courses, where knowledge within security and crisis management is treated. Examples of such courses are “Swedish crisis management: Crisis leadership and coordination”, and “Sensors for increased security & crisis management”.
  • Depth courses, in some cases based on already existing courses which have been adapted to meet the needs and topics included in Forum Securitatis. Examples are the courses “Fourier optics in security and crisis management applications” and “Robust wireless communication systems for safety and security”.
  • Multi-disciplinary courses that are possible to follow for students from different faculties, and the participants interact with students from backgrounds another than their own. Examples are the courses, “Ethics, surveillance technologies and integrity” and “Resilience Engineering for crisis management”,
  • Soft skill such as the course “Entrepreneurship in Theory and Practice”.

Networking activities

Networking activities are open for external participants including graduate students, supervisors, industry, public authorities, etc. Networking activities include workshops, seminars, internal conferences, and study visits. The contacts thus created can form the basis for, joint projects, analysis of user needs or future employment.

Mobility programme

The Mobility programme is designed to strengthen contacts between academia, industry and public authorities, and as a platform for interaction with excellent scientific environments abroad. It is expected that Forum Securitatis students will perform a part of their research project in industry, a public authority, or to spend a period at a research institute abroad. A portion of the School’s budget is reserved for individual mobility allowances.
Forum Securitatis is intended to supplement the student’s normal studies, and as such does not provide basic funding. The major portion of the School’s budget is allocated for the mobility programme and for new course development.

After graduating, students participating in Forum Securitatis will have a broader experience of security and crisis management in realistic situations, and a network of relevant contacts. The mobility programme also gives the students the opportunity to participate in activities that otherwise would require separate funding.
