Strategic research areas
From 2012, Linköping University can count on another SEK 63 million per year for fixed research grants. This was the outcome of the government's investment in strategic research areas.
For the first five years, when funding increases gradually from year to year, LiU will receive a total of SEK 252.5 million, which puts the university in seventh place among the 18 universities that share the new faculty funds totalling SEK 1.35 billion.
LiU receives grants for five of the designated research areas, including three as a primary applicant.
A total of 43 research areas are funded across the country.
Professor Lennart Ljung, SEK 30.7 million per year, of which SEK 13.8 million goes to LiU (Collaborative partners: Lund University, Blekinge Institute of Technology and Halmstad University).
Professor Lars Hultman, SEK 28 million per year.
Professor Fredrik Gustafsson, SEK 7.6 million per year, of which SEK 6.6 million to LiU (Collaborative partner: KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Chalmers University of Technology).
In addition, LiU are co-applicant in e-Science (SEK 8.1 million per year to LiU) and transport research (SEK 6.5 million to LiU).

The chemist Jacob Berzelius, 1779-1848, a native of Östergötland, was one of Sweden’s foremost scientists of all time. The painting is said to be of Berzelius in his lab.
