Choosing colours for scientific presentations based on human colour perception

Gunilla Borgefors from Uppsala University will give a seminar Thursday, Nov 13th at 15.15 in NOBEL, Physics building, Campus Valla.
Human colour perception is rather limited, compared with most of the rest of the animal kingdom. I will present some of its properties.   Based on those properties, I will give advice on how to choose colours for scientific figures and diagrams, to make them as easy to interpret as possible. The talk is based on physical and perception research, but some of the advice is my own interpretation of how to use that knowledge.

Transformer Awards

From the December announcement of the Award we received eight applications of very good quality. They were read by em prof Karl-Eric Magnusson, em prof Ingemar Lundström and Stefan Klintström. Finally the decision was that the following should receive the award:

•    Elin Nyman, Erik Gabrielsson and Sara Bergstrand, 12 months

•    Robert Selegård and Sara Helander, 6 months

A prerequisite for the award is that the PI/s that have promised to be responsible for 50% of the salary costs and for all other costs do so. If the person receives eg a VR scholarship or continues to another job the Transformer Award will be finalized.

A new course in presentation technique in English will start end of January. There will be 12 lectures during the spring, with 3 hours each time on Thursday afternoons, 13 - 16. The first lecture will take place on Jan 30 at 13.15

Each participant should give two longer prepared presentations and a number of shorter presentations, with and without pictures, together with introduction and  closing of a session. Also the use of pictures and graphics, presentations, handling of questions etc will be covered. Some of the presentations will be video recorded for a subsequent analysis and evaluation.

The arrangement of this course is shared between Forum and Agora. Since the maximum number of participants is limited to 12, you should register as quickly as possible to Per Olof Holtz (poh@ifm.liu.se). Monday 13 January the course will be announced more widely so make your registration before that!

Two high profile amyloid experts give guest lecturers

Wednesday 11 December starting at 9:15 in Planck, Physics Building, Campus Valla

Gunilla Westermark (UU), is professor of medical cell biology. She has worked on cell death associated with amyloid and amyloid formation, especially islet amyloid associated with beta cell death and type II diabetes and also studies on amyloid transfer and transmissibility. For implementation of this research have several cell and animal models been established including transgenic and non-transgenic mouse models.

Per Westermark (UU), is MD and emeritus professor of pathology but active in research and clinical work. He has worked within the amyloid field for 40 years, and he has been particularly interested in the diversity of amyloid diseases and proteins and was involved in the discovery of 8 of them. Together with G.T. Westermark he has convincingly shown that AA amyloidosis is transmissible by a prion-like mechanism and that also cross-seeding is possible. Of particular interest was the demonstration of animal AA amyloid in the human food chain and the finding that this material could induce AA amyloidosis in susceptible mice.

”Domestication, Sexual selection and the chicken”

Dominic Wright
Time: March 18 at 10:15. Place: Planck, Fysikhuset
Abstract: Although most famous for his idea of Natural Selection, Darwin also came up with another revolutionary concept – that of sexual selection. With this, he theorised why so many animals have such a wide array of ornaments, decorations and behaviours that may not be beneficial to their direct survival. One such sexual ornament is the chicken comb (the fleshy, red appendage on top of their head). Both males and females have a comb, which they use to help select a mate. To help study this ornament and process (sexual selection) we are actually using another tool that fascinated Darwin – that of domestication. During domestication the comb of the chicken has become massively enlarged proportional to its body size and we can use it to help explain sexual selection in the chicken. By crossing domestic chickens with wild chickens, we can begin to unravel the genetic differences that cause these changes, and also begin to identify what other traits they influence.

Statistical methods in experimental science, 3-4,5 hp

This course will be given by Prof Anders Grimvall some time between April 18 and June 1 (exact start and end date will be decided by the participants and the examiner). The course has previously been given seven times and the participating PhD students have been very satisfied with it. Focus will be on problems brought to the course by the participants.
The prerequisites are at least a quarter of a year of Mathematics including at least three weeks of Statistics, but also participants with more knowledge are welcome. It is also a prerequisite that the PhD student has a project where statistical analysis of data is an important element. The participants should bring their own data (or data from the research group) to be discussed and analysed.
The course will be given in English, and it includes lessons, 2-3 hours each, at 6-10 occasions. The number of participators should be 6-15 PhD students (members of Forum Scientium will have priority if needed). The deadline for application is March 15, 2012 by e-mail to Anne Moe, anne.moe@liu.se
Remember that you must have permission from your main supervisor to apply for the course.

Boston

We are now in the process of contacting different persons that can host us during our visit to the Boston area. We need the help. especially from senior researchers for this. A personal contact will make it much easier. It is a little bit urgent as we need to have enough first positive answers before we buy our flight tickets. Therefore I would like to ask the senior researchers reading this to contact Erik Martinsson (erik.martinsson@liu.se) or Camilla Halvarsson (camilla.halvarsson@liu.se) during next week with your proposals of persons that you could help us to contact. That is January 20 at the latest.
