”Domestication, Sexual selection and the chicken”
Dominic Wright
Time: March 18 at 10:15. Place: Planck, Fysikhuset
Abstract: Although most famous for his idea of Natural Selection, Darwin also came up with another revolutionary concept – that of sexual selection. With this, he theorised why so many animals have such a wide array of ornaments, decorations and behaviours that may not be beneficial to their direct survival. One such sexual ornament is the chicken comb (the fleshy, red appendage on top of their head). Both males and females have a comb, which they use to help select a mate. To help study this ornament and process (sexual selection) we are actually using another tool that fascinated Darwin – that of domestication. During domestication the comb of the chicken has become massively enlarged proportional to its body size and we can use it to help explain sexual selection in the chicken. By crossing domestic chickens with wild chickens, we can begin to unravel the genetic differences that cause these changes, and also begin to identify what other traits they influence.

Statistical methods in experimental science, 3-4,5 hp
This course will be given by Prof Anders Grimvall some time between April 18 and June 1 (exact start and end date will be decided by the participants and the examiner). The course has previously been given seven times and the participating PhD students have been very satisfied with it. Focus will be on problems brought to the course by the participants.
The prerequisites are at least a quarter of a year of Mathematics including at least three weeks of Statistics, but also participants with more knowledge are welcome. It is also a prerequisite that the PhD student has a project where statistical analysis of data is an important element. The participants should bring their own data (or data from the research group) to be discussed and analysed.
The course will be given in English, and it includes lessons, 2-3 hours each, at 6-10 occasions. The number of participators should be 6-15 PhD students (members of Forum Scientium will have priority if needed). The deadline for application is March 15, 2012 by e-mail to Anne Moe, anne.moe@liu.se
Remember that you must have permission from your main supervisor to apply for the course.
Basic Management of Research Projects
Mandatory for all Forum Scientium members. Given twice a year. This time in English.
Dates March 14, March 28 and 11 April (full days)

Boston
We are now in the process of contacting different persons that can host us during our visit to the Boston area. We need the help. especially from senior researchers for this. A personal contact will make it much easier. It is a little bit urgent as we need to have enough first positive answers before we buy our flight tickets. Therefore I would like to ask the senior researchers reading this to contact Erik Martinsson (erik.martinsson@liu.se) or Camilla Halvarsson (camilla.halvarsson@liu.se) during next week with your proposals of persons that you could help us to contact. That is January 20 at the latest.
