Christmas Banquette
people.ifm.liu.se/stekl/christmas.pdf
Please find attached the invitation to the annual Forum Scientium Christmas Banquette, December 9th.
Workshops will be organized during the afternoon the same day that will give you the opportunity to experience a method, used by Forum members, “live” and “in action”. Take the chance to learn a new technique, discuss an application to your research and talk about new collaborations or twinning projects. The workshop will include a demonstration, basic theory as well as requirements and limitations of the method.
We are working on the workshop schedule and will come back with details soon.
If you have any ideas or questions feel free to contact Jutta or Alexandra.
R.V.S.P. before Monday 29/11
Backpack rules
(This does not apply for the Marie Curie Scholarships who have the same kind of money directly from EU)
Each Forum member has a backpack of 15 000 SEK per year. The backpack should be used for the doctoral studies e.g. conferences, summer schools, external courses, course literature, etc. Notice! All participation in conferences or courses has to be approved by the supervisor in advance. The course literature will be a property of the department. The costs should be approved in advance. Contact Susann Årnfelt and discuss with her how to do in each individual case. To get your backpack there is a need for more than 60% attendance at the Forum seminars, to make your Forum workload and other mandatory things. At the day of your defence the backpack will be zeroed.
If you would like to know how much money you have left in your backpack contact Susann Årnfelt.
Credits for summer conferences and Monthly seminars
After attending three summer conferences you can receive 3 hp. Also after attending three years of monthly seminars you can get another 3 hp for that. If you would like to have this in your Ladok and have fulfilled the criteria and in sufficient time before your defense you contact Susann Årnfelt and we will register it in forskar-Ladok.

I started my PhD in the group of Prof. Magnus Rueping December 2009, at RWTH-Aachen University, Germany (http://www.rwth-aachen.de/go/id/bdz/). The group is quite new here in Aachen. Prof. Rueping moved here with his group from Frankfurt last spring, and the group is expanding still. The group consist of the moment of over 20 group members. We are a very international group with people from every part of the world.
The subject of my research here is to develop new enantioselective brönstedt acid catalyst. Since it is very important in organic synthesis were we can design reactions with high enantioselectivity eg when designing new drug candidates. On the group homepage (http://www.oc3.rwth-aachen.de/rueping/research.html) you can read more about our research.

Organic Chemistry for non-chemists, 5 points
will be given in the spring semester 2010. The course will be held for non-chemists on a level suitable for PhD students not majoring chemistry before. About 13-15 lectures will be given approx. once a week.
The course will start the 28 th of January at 15.15 -17 in room Bikupan at Chemistry in the B-House. It is planned to be scheduled weekly Thursdays between 15-17.
We will follow the book Fundamentals og Organic Chemistry 6 ed McMurry/Simanek, which will be available from the bookshop in Kårallen. As the book title tells the course will give fundamentals in organic chemistry, which can and may be of importance in many fields of eg physics. Examination: Either written exam or home problems throughout the course.
For those of you who wants to attend the course, please give Stefan Svensson, sts@ifm.liu.se, a mail in response January 6, together with a notice if I should order the book to the bookshop for you.
