The Lancet’s new gender strategy

The Lancet is encouraging participating researchers to analyse their data from a gender perspective, not just when it could affect results, but as standard procedure.

The decision was made in November 2011 and is, partly, as a result of the EU-FP7 project ‘genSET’, in which the Division of Gender Studies at Linköping University has played an important part.

‘genSET’ stands for Gender in Science and Technology, and is a project that promotes the inclusion of the gender dimension in science and technology. The project has produced a consensus report in which leading European scientists gave their recommendations on how to achieve this.

“If these recommendations really were followed in the scientific community we would see major changes,” says Gender Studies professor Jeff Hearn.

‘genSET’ is a collaboration between scientists in several European countries and more than 100 scientific organisations, including:
• Swedish National Agency for Higher Education
• European Science Foundation
• Euroscience

Jeff Hearn is coordinator for the Swedish section of the project, in collaboration with Professor Liisa Husu from Örebro University.
