Stroke
Stroke involves a rapid loss of brain functions as a consequence of insufficient oxygen supply. The cause can be a blood clot (thrombosis or embolism) or cerebral haemorrhage. A softer, transient form of oxygen deprivation in the brain is called TIA (transient ischaemic attack). Research into strokes deals partially with diagnosis – how to determine which type of stroke the patient has suffered and where in the brain the injury is located, and partially on treatment strategies in the acute phase of the illness. Studies of preventative treatment are another important focus.
