Signals and synapses

Understanding how signal transmission functions is of great significance for research into diseases of the nervous system. Stimuli from the surroundings are transmitted from the peripheral nerves to the central nervous system. Nerve cells “talk” with each other through pouring chemical neurotransmitters into the synapses, the narrow junctions between the cells. Ion channels, small holes in the cell membranes which are the key actors in all biological systems, have an important function in nerve impulse control.
