General medicine

General medicine as a medical specialisation has an emphasis on meetings with patients. The competency includes diagnosis and therapy for all kinds of health problems in a definite section of the population: rehabilitation, nursing care, preventive measures and health education.

What was earlier a distinctively practical area is now also more and more a research-based field of knowledge. General medical research can deal with the effects and quality in relations between doctor and patient, dialogue, diagnostics, and therapy. It can also be directed towards particular illnesses, risk factors, and treatment.

The results of international research have shown that people’s health improves concurrently with an increased investment in general medicine and primary health care. Research also shows that general practitioners can handle most health problems with a high level of quality and a low cost.
