General medicine as a medical specialisation has an emphasis on meetings with patients. The competency includes diagnosis and therapy for all kinds of health problems in a definite section of the population: rehabilitation, nursing care, preventive measures and health education.

General medical research can deal with the effects and quality in relations between doctor and patient, dialogue, diagnostics, and therapy. It can also be directed towards particular illnesses, risk factors, and treatment.
