Type 2 Diabetes
Research into Type 2 diabetes has several branches:
- The molecular mechanisms of action of insulin and the molecular mechanisms behind insulin resistance.
- Metabolism and fat storage in adipocytes, which is a dominant risk factor for Type 2 diabetes.
- Cardiovascular diseases are major complications in diabetes. The function of insulin and IGF1 in the cells of blood vessels is being investigated as a risk factor. In order to identify other risk factors, 750 patients with Type 2 diabetes are being studied in a prospective study within primary health care (CARDIPP).
Areas of research
- The molecular mechanisms for insulin control of fat cells, with a particular focus on the mechanisms of insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes (Link to Peter Stålfors site).
- Pathophysiological mechanisms behind aggregation of proteins and the formation of cell toxic amyloid (Länk till Gunilla Westermarks sida).
