Type 1 Diabetes
Research into Type 1 diabetes focuses on prediction and etiology of the disease - especially the significance of genetics, viral infections, and other environmental factors such as stress - as well as the autoimmune mechanisms that destroy beta cells.
A large part of the work is based on a prospective epidemiological study (ABIS) of 17,000 children who have been followed since birth and are now in school age. Another exciting line of research deals with the possibility of preventing or slowing the progression of Type 1 diabetes through immunization.
