Gastrointestinal Cancer

Cancer in the colon and rectum, or colorectal cancer, is the second most common form of cancer in both men and women in Sweden. Symptoms vary depending on where the tumour is located, but the most important symptom is rectal bleeding. There is much that points towards diet being significant for the emergence of colon cancer, above all, but inherited factors also play a role.

Advances in molecular biology and genomics have provided the opportunity to identify high-risk individuals and detect tumours at an early stage. Research at LiU is focused on finding biomarkers for colorectal cancer. Genetic markers are used for three purposes: to decide whethera person runs the risk of developing cancer, making a survival diagnosis, and designing individual treatment.
