Skin Cancer

Malignant melanoma is one of the most rapidly increasing cancer type in Northern Europe. It is the most serious form of skin cancer often spreading throughout the body by metastasis. The tumour arises from the pigment-producing cells in the body - the melanocytes.

Other less serious forms of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
Dermatology research at LiU concentrates on gene expression in cell cultures and in patients, the significance of UV radiation and biological factors for diagnosis and prognosis for patients with malignant melanoma. Within clinical chemistry, processes for quantifying the growth of melanoma cells and RNA transcription from these cells in the blood are being developed.
