Psychology

Psychology is a scientific discipline which is over 100 years old and which has the human being as its main object of study. Psychology can be described as the scientific study of human behaviour and mental processes. In a systematic way, psychology tries to describe man's inner mental and emotional life, his motives and driving forces. Describe and explain how people feel, think and act and how we affect each other.

Today, the topic of psychology stands for an advanced methodological and theoretical knowledge that has provided and continues to provide us with useful knowledge within many areas of central importance to human health and well-being.

At Linköping University, the psychology subject can be found at the department of Behavioural Sciences and Learning.

Social psychology is the scientific study of individuals in social contexts, with emphasis on how human relations are established, developed and how they change. One area that is studied in particular in recent years is the group processes in connection with mass events, such as demonstrations and sporting events. The studies are known as "Riot Research".

Clinical psychology seeks to understand, predict and facilitate adjustment problems, functional impairments and discomfort. Clinical psychology also includes studies concerning the diagnosis of psychiatric and somatic symptoms, cause and effect relationships and development processes as well as prevention and treatment research. At LiU, researchers in clinical psychology focus on fields such as anxiety, depression and health problems such as tinnitus and chronic pain. Many projects are working with CBT treatments over the Internet.

Developmental psychology is about how human beings develop cognitively, socially and emotionally. The research primarily focuses on typical and atypical cognitive and socio-emotional development during the first 25 years of life. Areas of particular interest are cognition, communication and vulnerability. A particular area of interest is research on infants' early social and cognitive development. Primary focus is on memory, imitation and attention in children aged 6 to 18 months, see below under "Babylab".

Cognitive psychology is about human mental processes, how we perceive, represent and use information and knowledge.

Neuropsychology is about how the human brain and nervous system functions and how they are related to our mental processes and behaviour. Members of the research team KNN, cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychology, study areas such as nutrition and brain development, working memory, memory functions in relation to ageing and neurodegenerative disorders, cognitive hearing science, and functional brain imaging of language, memory and sleep functions.

Educational psychology focuses on child development and learning in mathematics, reading and writing skills and foreign language (English). Among other things, it seeks to find underlying causes of learning disabilities. It
also aims to develop and test ways to promote children's early development and learning, and prevent future learning difficulties.
