Materials Science
Materials Science has developed from being an applied and engineering field into also encompassing basic science and high technology. There are also interesting connections with other research domains such as medicine and data storage.
The research domain receives long-term funding from three main sources.
The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research supports FUNCASE; Functional Carbides and Advanced Surface Engineering, with a five year Synergy Grant (2012-2017).
Vinnova supports industry-related research at the Functional Nanoscale Materials (FunMat) centre. 13 industrial companies are partners and financial contributors.
The Swedish Research Council allocated one of its “Linnaeus grants” to basic research at Linköping’s Linnaeus Initiative for New Functional Materials (LiLi-NFM). The initiative is structured around three areas of basic skills: materials synthesis, modelling/simulation of materials and materials analysis.
