MSc Computer Systems, 120 credits

Degree: Master of Science (two years) with a major in Computer Science and Engineering.
Teaching language: English
The Computer Systems master's programme focuses on the development of complex state-of-the-art computer systems. It provides a comprehensive understanding of the various interacting layers of complex computer systems, from hardware and systems software to networks and applications.
Modern computer systems are extremely diverse, from "invisible" computers hidden in cars, mobile phones and MP3 players to the familiar PCs or the most sophisticated supercomputers. Most of these computers do not work in isolation but are interconnected through complex wired or wireless networks. The Computer Systems master's programme deepens the knowledge in design, programming and use of such systems. Students can choose from one of the following specialisations:
- Embedded systems: Study focuses on the modelling, analysing, designing and programming of complex and often safety-critical functionality, achieved through complex interplay between sophisticated software and hardware components. The topics include both the architecture of the hardware infrastructure and the software layers, such as real-time operating system, and software development techniques.
- System software: This specialisation focuses on the design and implementation of system software and applications. It includes advanced compiling techniques, operating systems-related issues, advanced databases and modern techniques for application development.
- Networking and distributed systems: The courses concentrate on issues related to networking infrastructure, design of distributed systems, development of distributed software, information security and web programming Applications can be a huge network over a large geographic area, or a more compact distributed system, such as in a car.
The programme is firmly anchored in the nationally and internationally recognised research conducted in the areas of Computer Systems and Computer Science at Linköping University.
A wide range of fast developing industry sectors are generating an increasing demand for skilled professionals in the Computer Systems area. The Computer Systems master's programme gives students the solid basis needed to take advantage of professional opportunities as a computer systems' engineer in the high-tech industry. It also constitutes an excellent platform for a continuation as a PhD student.
