Three women sub 10 on 3000 m

2010-02-28

Beata Frida Linnea

Beata Falk, Frida Aspnäs and Linnea Gustafsson have all run sub 10 min on 3000 m during track races this winter (electric timing). We can see that speed on fast surface has improved, despite all the snow; training with track runners in our athletics halls and intervals on treadmills has paid off.

Three gold medals

2009-10-24

The demanding night courses with difficult map-reading in detailed terrain suited some of the LiU-runnersThe demanding night courses with difficult map-reading in detailed terrain suited some of the LiU-runners during the Swedish night championships. In men's class there also was an interesting long route choice running on road. This was chosen by Peter Öberg but not by Emil Andersson, who lost nearly 2 min by running "straight on". Despite this, Emil came fifth in men's class and was third Swedish runner (the championships are open for foreign runners) and he showed that he is one of the nation's leading night orienteering runners.

LiU Orienteering had a successful competition with three gold medals by Peter Öberg (H21), Beata Falk (D20) and Linn Bränneby (D18) – prospective student and member of the training group in recent years. At the same time, many LiU runners had major problems to master the difficult map-reading.

LiU:s great day with two gold medals

2009-09-12

Linnea Gustafsson and Peter Öberg got a double victory for LiU and OK Hällen during the Swedish Championships in the middle-distance settled in Flinshult outside Oskarshamn.

Linnea Gustafsson, WOC silver medalist, got her first national championship medal. 23-year-old Linnea has previously never been better than seventh in the Swedish Championships. Now she won by a clear margin before Karolina A Höjsgaard, Domnarvet.

Peter Öberg defended his victory from last year after a duel with David Andersson, Malung.

- I knew before that it would be a duel against David, said Peter who started after David and was paced in the finish to victory with four seconds.

In the junior classes LiU's girls had a better day than the boys. Beata Falk Hagaby GoIF took the silver medal before Anna Forsberg OK Kolmården. The boys had great problems and all medal candidates made misstakes in the tricky terrain - including Erik Pettersson who the day before won his qualifying heat and showed brilliant form. Almost another World Championship medal for Linnea Gustafsson

2009-08-23

Linnea Gustafsson's WOC week in Hungary ended with a great 5th-place in the long-distance. When she reached the finish she took the lead with about 3 minutes but there were still a dozen runners left in the forest, those who were the fastest in the qualifying races.

Simone Niggli Switzerland, Marianne Andersen Norway and Minna Kaupi Finland took the medals while fourth place was declared by Dana Brozkova Czech Republic – all of them earlier world champion gold-medalists.

Totally an incredibly good WOC for Linnea with a silver and a 5th-place in two starts.

Webb-TV about Linnea on the Swedish federation's webbsite.

WOC silver for Linnea Gustafsson

2009-08-20

Linnea Gustafsson LiU's Linnea Gustafsson has in the recent two years has gone from "Gotlandic junior runner with no national team missions" to "senior runner member of the national team and on international elite level". Will we ever see a runner establish herself so rapidly to the international level?

This year it was time for her second world championship, this year in Hungary, and after the success of the World Games in Taiwan she was mentioned as one of the medal candidates. The last training session at home showed fine physical shape giving security around speed. She was now able to focus on map reading and routing problems in the specific terrain.

This morning's qualifying race she ran as a safe training course and easily got a place in the finale. During the evening's final race, she lost a bit of time initially but then ran as fast Helena Jansson and former champion Simone Niggli. The speed was enough for a silver medal after Helena Jansson and just before the multiple world champion Simone Niggli, Switzerland.

Pictures from the euphoria on OK Hällen's webbsite and an evening interview on SOFT:s hemsida.

To the Swedish federation happy Linnea said:

– Entirely surprising that it went well. I could not believe that my race would be enough for a medal.
– I do not think the track was particularly difficult, but there were some tricks sometimes and very fun.

About the winner Helena, who today won his first WOC gold medal, Linnea Gustafsson said:

– Helena is fantastic.

Now Linnea will prepare for the long-distance final...

Frida and Beata selected for Euromeeting

2009-07-27

Twelve Swedes – including LiU's Frida Aspnäs and new LiU-student Beata Falk (still a junior) - have been selected to run Euromeeting. The races are in Muotatal 20 miles east of Lucerne in Switzerland. Euromeeting is a competition where the B-team runners from different countries meet and get a chance race against international top runners. It is part of the Swiss O Week. This year's competitions in mountain terrain are supposed to prepare runners for WOC 2011 in France and World Cup 2012 in Switzerland.

During the middle-distance in the World Games in Taiwan LiU's Linnea Gustafsson reached her greatest international success so far; bronze medal after Australian Johanna Allston and Finnish Minna Kauppi – both with the World Championship medals in the merit list. Linnea decided the battle for bronze medal by safer map reading than Danish Signe Søes at the second last control.

In the men's class LiU's Peter Öberg ended in 10th place.

Öberg 4th in World Cup Chasing Start

2009-06-27

After Friday's middle-distance in the World Cup followed Saturday's long-distance and Chasing Start; tough 14.3 kilometer and 32 degrees heat in the Baerum-terrain outside Oslo. LiU coach Peter Öberg did well; he was only passed by three runners (Martin Johansson, Anders Nordberg and Emil Wingstedt) and took fourth place.

Among LiU's ladies Frida Aspnäs ran fastest and advanced to 30th place, despite a 5 min mistake.

Another victory in the World Cup for Öberg

2009-06-26

Although Peter Öberg believed that the map reading was difficult and speed was reduced he formed a pace highh enough for another victory in the World Cup, now outside Oslo. LiU's ladies Linnea Lidström and debutant Frida Aspnäs had a less successful day, after a number of mistakes Linnea finished 26th and Frida 44th - both longing for revenge in the Saturday Chasing Start.

Kalle 1 second from a medal in the Open Nordic Championships

2009-06-10

Wednesday was the last competition day in the Open Nordic Orienteering Championships and sprint was the final distance. Peter Öberg and Anton Tynong skipped this discipline though they already felt satisfied with the earlier medals. Anton's favorite distances are the middle and long-distance which both contain pure forest running. For Peter rest was needed because of his the former injured calf.

Several of the other LiU runners have sprint as their best discipline. They took no medals but all competed well and Kalle Johansson just missed the bronze medal with a margin of 1 s. LiU results:

Women seniors (part of World Cup):
7) Linnea Gustafsson
Women juniors:
6) Kristin Löfgren
8) Anna Forsberg (ej LiU-student men medlem i träningsgruppen)
Men juniors:

Victory in the World Cup and gold medal to Peter Öberg

2009-06-09

Peter Öberg performed great with a fantastic race in the middle distance; he won gold in the Nordic championships and won the first World Cup race before Thierry Gueorgiou and Valentin Novikov.

– Thierry Gueorgiou has been the undisputed king in middle distance in recent years, so it felt great to beat him now, was Peter's coment in the victory interview, seconds after the gold was secured.

Öberg took gold in the 6.0 kilometers long track with 25-second margin to Thierry Gueorgiou and additional 15 seconds to Valentin Novikov.

For Peter this was the first major international title individually. Earlier he has won a World Cup sprint with 10 000 spectators at Högfjällshotellet during Oringen in Sälen last summer.

Before Tuesday's races, he showed great form; during the past weekend he was 4th in the long-distance and won the relay in a very impressive way.

Öberg also had great hopes before this race. In Web TV he said:

- The terrain suits me perfectly. Gueorgiou masters all terrain types, but I am quite sure I can beat him here.

Another medal to Anton in the Nordic Championships

2009-06-09

For Anton Tynong 2009 is his best season ever. In the middle-distance, he secured his third medal – now bronze (earlier two silver medals in long-distance and relay).

– I felt secure today - I'm satisfied. A sprained foot at the second control but this was no major problem, was Antons comment. .

Also Kalle Johansson (6th) and Olle Kalered (10th) made great races in men's junior class

Another medal for Kristin in the Nordic Championships

2009-06-09

For Kristin Löfgren 2009 is her best season ever. In the middle-distance she took another medal – this time silver.

– I am really happy and made only two minor misstakes on a total of 1 min, said a happy Kristin Löfgren.

Three gold medals to LiU during the relays in the Open Nordic Championships

2009-06-07

Three gold medals and one silver medal in four different teams - LiU Orienteering runners ruled in three of four classes.

In the men's class Sweden started with David Andersson who changed as 6th runner 24 s after Mats Haldin Finland – a secure start. On the second leg Swedish world champion Emil Wingstedt advanced to third place one minute up to Swiss' world champion Daniel Hubbman. LiU's Peter Öberg ran incredibly inspired on the final leg; he was fastest of all and passed both Finland and Switzerland. Gold medal for Peter with a clear margin before Switzerland, Finland and France.

Peter Öberg's victory, foto SOFT Linnea Gustafsson to the right, foto SOFT

In women's class LiU's Linnea Gustafsson ran the first leg so well that she gave Sweden the lead with over 1 min before favourite, Finland and Norway – perhaps Linnea's greatest international merit! She sent out Kajsa Nilsson who unfortunately was passed by Norwegian World Champion Marianne Andersen, but on the final leg Helena Jansson secured another gold medal to Sweden.

Anton Tynong (ul) and Kalle Johansson (dr), foto SOFT Men's junior class was incredibly thrilling; Sweden's strong junior squad with many even runners formed three teams who all had the capacity to win! And so it was…

First team with LiU's Anton Tynong on the first leg took the silver medal but was beaten of Sweden team 3 with LiU's Kalle Johansson on the final leg. Kalle who already has national medals in cross & country and track running now has a Nordic gold medal in orienteering.

In the women's junior class LiU's Kristin Löfgren started very good on the first leg and was in the lead halfway – but made a mistake just before the change. Anna Segersson and OK Kolmården Anna Forsberg followed on leg two and three and the team ended in fourth place.

Back after injury, and victory in the Elite Series

2009-05-10

National team star Peter Öberg, LiU coach competing for OK Hällen, injured his calf before Tiomila and since then he has done recovery training. The first race was planned to be done with reduced speed and a sharply taped foot to prevent a new upward foot sprain. Today it finally was time – it all ended with superior victory the Elite Series! Peter is once again a shining example of great performing immediately after serious recovery training.

Peter Öberg – back after injury.

Today's contest was middle distance in Norrby, 30 kilometers northwest of Sandviken. Peter Öberg ran the 5.9 kilometers long course on 35:51. Nobody else was close to that time in the very tricky terrain. Number two Jan Troeng, OK Linné, was distanced by nearly two minutes.

– I'm a little surprised of today's victory; I have been injured and have barely run a few times before this competition. But map reading felt great and I have made a good race technically, was Peter Öberg's comment.

In women's class LiU runner Linnea Gustafsson showed that she is one of the best ladies in the country, 4th in Saturday's long distance and 6th in Sunday's long distance which means that Linnea is on an overall third place just behind Saturday's winner Helena Jansson and Sunday's winner Emma Johansson – she also LiU-student who has moved to Borlänge for the final graduating.

Other LiU results: Linnea Lidström finished 16th and is on 11th place in summary. Frida Aspnäs came on 9th place on Sunday and is overall 22. Erik Liljequist was 14th during the Sunday and is on an overall 19th place.

Kristin convinced at Silva Cup

2009-05-10

With a second and a third place at this weekend's races in the Silva Cup Kristin Löfgren is back after illnes. Are the results on the same level at the coming up races in Sundsvall, a place in the junior national team at the Nordic Championships probably will be hers.

Bronze to Sigge in the Danish Championships

2009-04-26

Last year Danish ultra long-distance king, 22-year-old Rasmus Djurhuus from FIF Hillerød was also this year, a sure winner in the Danish championship in ultra long distance orienteering. Silver for Runo Olsen from Tisvilde Hegna OK and bronze for LiU's Sigge Lundedal Jensen, FIF Hillerød, only 13 seconds from the silver – a small margin after the entire 25,700 metres!

Antons great breakthrough

Anton Tynong

2009-04-26

A winter with tougher training than before gave immediate results for LiU's Anton Tynong. Physically his body has felt very good and in the first two races of Silva Cup he showed that he is a hot candidate for a start in this summer's Junior World Championships in Italy. Victory in Saturday's demanding long-distance, with LiU's Olle Kalered in fourth place and third place in Sunday's middle distance.
Among the girls Alva Olsson and Kristin Löfgren ran well during the long distance with a third and fifth place. Kristin was disrupted by a cold and she hopes that spring's early graet shape, her best ever, will come back to the Silva Cup in Gustavsberg.

Emil 5th in the Danish Championships

2009-04-26

Fifth and seventh place for LiU's Danish orienteers Emil Folino and Sigge Lundedal in the Danish Championships in sprint orienteering . The course contained many interesting route choices and can be studied here!

WC camp after the Elite Series

2009-04-25

Finspång offered tough long-distance courses during the Elite Series. For the senior national team runners, this was just the beginning. Immediately after Saturday's competition the squad left to Hungary for one week's training camp to prepare for the World Championships in August. LiU-runners in the squad are: Peter Öberg, Linnea Gustafsson and first year senior Erik Lijequist.

Three of top eight in the Elite Series

2009-04-25

The Elite Series in Finspång was a great success for the female LiU orienteers; three runners among the eight fastest and the ladies again showed that they have improved to a new level thanks to serious winter training. Really fast was Linnea Gustafsson who took a third straight place on the podium, this time second place. In sixth place came Linnea Lidström and in eighth place Frida Aspnäs. The courses were very demanding.

Fast running of LiU gentlemen in the Tiomila-night

2009-04-19

Here is some running worth mentioning, by LiU-orienteers at Tiomila in Skåne:

Erik Liljequist ran the first leg (night) in the team Älme/Markaryd and did so with great authority, he took care of pace and map reading ahead of the 350 runners. The only mistake he made was a route choice just before the final control when four runners could sneak past him, including prospective LiU-student Victor Silvemark.

On the fourth and longest night leg – the so-called Long night – OK Denseln's Olle Kalered ran very fast in a group including Jakob Lööf from OK Pan. Olle had the second fastest time 1:43:51 and only Dane Christian Christensen IFK Gothenburg was faster than Olle.

On the fifth leg Anton Östlin Södertälje-Nykvarn had the fastest time of all and changed over in the lead. OK Densel'n Emil Folino Nielsen also had high speed on this leg and had the fourth fastest time.

In dawn, on the eighth leg, Petter Eriksson had the sixth fastest time – an impressive effort given that he met high class runners on this leg near the end of the relay.

Fastest team with LiU orienteer were IK Hakarpspojkarna who had Erik Holmberg on Route 9.

LiU ladies tenth on Tiomila

2009-04-18

Club team OK Kolmården surprised with a tenth place in the women's Tiomila. Of the five women four train in LiU's training group and two of them are included in LiU Elite Sports.

At the initial route Frida Aspnäs – KTS-student in Norrköping – opened very good; Frida showed great cold though the stress off leg 1 among 500 competitors.

In legs 2–4 Linn Bränneby, Veronica Lundh and Anna Forsberg continued with calm nerves. They sent nursing student Linnea Lidström out on the last leg. Linnea showed a high international standard and chased until a final tenth place – team's goal as written in Norrköping's Newspapers .

Linnea Gustafsson overall second in the Elite Series

2009-04-17

Also at the second race of the Elite Series, sprint race in the forest in the north of Helsingborg, LiU's Linnea Gustafsson showed class with another third place, now after winning Danish Signe Søes. Linnea is now second in the overall position. It feels like Linnea really is establishing herself in the national senior squad.

LiU's Linnea Lidström came on the twelfth place and she has also shown impressive stability in the Elite Series. Totally Lidström is in eighth place ahead of the coming long distance next weekend in Finspång – a race that will sort out the vast toughest.

In the men's class LiU's Erik Liljequist and LiU's Danish runner Sigge Lundedal again did fine race; Sigge is now 16:th ei summary and Erik 18th, after runners of mixed nationality. This race gave Liljequist one location a ticket to the Swedish national World Cup camp in Hungary!

Nostalgic training along men's course from Nordic Championship 1955

2009-04-14

14.8 km, twelve controls, scale 1:50 000 and tough terrain in Kolmården (Black Forest) – this describes the men's course from the first Nordic championship:

NC 1955, old map

LiU-orienteers ran this course this Tuesday evening. Most runners agreed that it went surprisingly well to handle the different map and scale. The mistakes that were committed were few, but took relatively long time to repair. The original map from the championship is seen here , and a newer version, with additional roads is seen here.

Elite Series premiere in Höör

2009-04-13

After Sunday's qualifying race with 120 women and 250 men the 40 fastest runners was chosen for Monday's final race with hunting start – an incomparable thrill with only single-second start intervals between lots of runners.

In women's class World Championship silver-runner Kajsa Nilson Halden SK started in front, at large 1:10 min before the chasing group containing LiU's Linnea Gustafsson OK Hällen and other national team runners. The lead decreased to 25 sec but Kajsa kept the lead all the way to the goal. In the battle of the second place Emma Engstrand Stora Tuna finished just before LiU's Linnea Gustafsson OK Hällen, Danish Signe Søes and Jenny Johansson Ulricehamns OK.

Annica Gustafsson IF Thor finished just before LiU's Linnea Lidström OK Kolmården and lots of other runners in the struggle of the tenth place. LiU's Frida Aspnäs OK Kolmården ended on the eighteenth place, just recovered after four weeks of illness and now only a few steps after Lena Eliasson Domnarvet GoIF.

In the men's class Mattias Millinger OK Linné was the king och the day – no one could follow him when he left the others behind after half of the final race. LiU's Sigge Lundedal OK Denseln ended on the fourteenth place, perhaps best race ever for Sigge and just behind Danish national team colleague Rasmus Djurhuus Kristiansand. LiU's first year senior Erik Liljequist OK Älme ended on the twentieth place.

Göran Persson at Campus Norrköping

2009-04-02

Former Swedish national team coach Göran Persson has many years experience and can provide invaluable assistance in preparing elite orienteers mentally for the coming major competitions. The trick to become charged and secure, no matter what happens in the environment, is often decisive for who, of two elite orienteers, will perform best in critical situations. You can still read about LiU Elite Group's cooperation with Göran Person on Marathon.se. Enjoy the pictures and text!

Long distance in the archipelago

2009-03-24

Spring and sunshine in the archipelago, photo LiU Elite Sports

This weekend most of LiU orienteers compete during the "Seagull relay" (Måsenstafetten), in the finest terrain you can imagine. Also to them who stay in Norrköping/Linköping something memorable is offered; long distance training in the archipelago. The purpose of this session is to recharge the runners' batteries – both mentally and physically – and get inspiration in the largest nature reserve of flat rocky pine forest around the Baltic Sea. Large parts of the area is completely untouched, ande we hope that the nature reserve is preserved for all time. With an eye in the sky there's a great possibility to see the European sea eagle!

Five pages about Linköping University Orienteering in Skogssport

2009-03-24

Skogssport To our great joy, a very informative and nice article about LiU Orienteering is published in the latest issue of the magazine Skogssport. This, together with a full page ad, should give future students a good picture of the orienteering activities at Linköping University in Norrköping/Linköping.

Skogssport's reporter Rasmus Westergren took part in training, education and daily life at Campus Norrköping - he also visited students in their home environment, especially apartments along Smedjegatan/Luntgatan/Kungsgatan in the neighborhood of Campus Norrköping.

A comparison with other universities in Sweden is made and it seems like the universities really have opened their eyes to the fact that orienteers often do well in their studies and therefore are an interesting target group. The University of Dalarna has a stable business since many years, now with Kalle Dalin as head coach. Blekinge Institute of Technology has hired Coach Martin Söderberg, who also works with OK Orion. Campus Haninge and Umeå University have good environments for sports and perhaps also will employ coaches. Gothenburg is also taking action...

David Andersson, Lena Eliasson, Artem Panchenko, Kalevan Rasti...

2009-03-24

As always LiU Orienteering houses some guest runners. Here are some visitors who will join LiU Orienteering training in the near future:

Thursday-Sunday this week, David Andersson and Lena Eliasson visit us. They stay in Norrköping after training camp in Finspång, borrow Erik Holmberg's apartment and will take part in two morning orienteering sessions and rock aerobics.

Artem Panchenko, Linköping's OK's Ukrainian acquisition, is also involved in several of this week's exercises. The extremely dedicated first year senior runner, 6th on the JWOC last year, IS staying with LOK: Oskar Vångel, Emanuel Winblad and Erik Backteman in central Norrköping and stays for a week.

Next week Kalevan Rasti visit LiU Orienteering on their way to their training camp in Åhus. They join the Tuesday morning oienteering at Little lake cabin. Accordingly, Hannu Airila can visit his former home town; he was an exchange student at LiU in fall 2007, the start up year with LiU Orienteering.

Intervals on grass

2009-03-16
The sun sets later and racing season is approaching. The interval training on hard ground, which in winter has been done indoors on running track and by sprint orienteering intervals in the city, now move onto the grass outside the athletics hall Stadium Arena; Himmestalund's field is like a large savannah, soon filled with runners/orienteers running like proud ostriches after winter indoor running-technique training on track, charged for the Swedish Cross & Country Championship and competitions in sprint orienteering

Himmelstalund's field = LiU:s savannah Stadium Arena, foto LiU Elitidrott

A typical training session on Himmelstalund's fields during Mondays/Fridays for several runners in the elite group is:
  • Warming up and running-technique session
  • 10*30 s:30 s with "proud style" on track/road (to ensure tall style running)
  • 10*3 min:1 min on grass (to increase lactic acid threshold in muscles used for running on hard ground)
  • 10*30 s:30 s with "proud style" on track/road (again to ensure tall style running)
  • The more VO2-max-oriented intervals will be included other days during the week and the lactic acid threshold-raising training on really soft ground will, as before, be done by orienteering courses.

Next meeting with former national team coach Göran Persson

    2009-03-16
Thursday April 2, Göran Persson, former national team coach of Swedish men's orienteering, comes to Norrköping to meet LiU Orienteering's Elite Group. The meeting is part of the cooperation with Göran when it comes to a holistic approach to elite efforts including how one with "smart selected truths" can control one's action in all situations, for example during competitions.

With a 1.2 m long map towards the sun

    typical Kolmården-terrain

    2009-03-12

This is what LiU Orienteering offers this Sunday before the theory meeting (training planning) in Little lake cottage; the course measuring 18 km heads south from the beginning to the finish, passing the five maps:
  • Myckelmossa
  • Bugsjöbladet
  • Sörsjö-Näkna
  • Ågelsjön
  • Herrsjön
  • The assembled map is thus 1.2 m long (3 times A3) at a scale of 1:12 500 and perhaps someone will carry the long map on rolls? Peter Öberg, Erik Liljekvist, Erik Andersson, Filip Dahlgren, Olle Kalered, Emil Andersson and Petter Eriksson among men, Linnea Gustafsson and Linnea Lidström among women, are expected to pump up the pace already in the beginning of the course which ends with 300 m climbing on 3 km running...

Orienteers took Swedish championship medals on track

    2009-03-07

In the final of the Swedish Junior Championship M22 1500 m the orienteer Erik Johansson took the responsibility to run up a high pace right from the start. He tired out his competitors and finally just track runners Tobias Ekhamre and Eric Senorski was left after 1300 m. These two he left on the last lap and Erik took gold medal with the time 3:53.26. Erik's twin brother and orienteer Kalle Johansson sprinted hard and took silver medal less than one second after Erik. In fifth place came LiU's Johan Walldén while Johan Hydén forced to break due to injury:

Final race in P19 1500 m were similar to the final of the M22 but LiU's Anton Danielson held up the speed. On the last lap remained only the favorite Jonas Leandersson Malmö AI and he past Anton in the last curve. Silver medal for "pacemaker" Anton Danielson and a fifth place for LiU-orienteer Olle Kalered (obscured in the background):

Theory meeting after the Sunday long run

    2009-03-04

After Sunday's long run March 15 in Little Lake Cottage there will be a theory meeting. The purpose is discussing the physiological parameters which affect the speed of long distance running. These may be the limit setting for the performance, parameters for development, and perhaps some of them already are well-developed. Each runner shell have knowledge of one's own body avoiding having to subsequently discover how training should be implemented when, in the worst case, copied others' training not fit their own body. Within LiU's träningsgrupp is great variation, in relation to the individual needs of the content in fysträningen. This theory passport will help runners to further understand how well developed various physiological parameters in the body.

During racing season is determined exercise content in high-degree of the personal needs and it is good time for repetition of the above.

    2009-03-03

This weekend will as usual offer two great orienteering courses:

Saturday's course in Söderköping has a total of 50 controls and measures 18 km with 850 m pitch. The terrain around the ancient castle, which is one of the largest of its kind (800 m * 500 m), is really tough. The terrain is free from snow and rather dry:

Tough hills and many controls …

Sunday's course has measures 16 km and is laid in the easy-run terrain at Nais' club cabin Bergkulla. It has long distances between the controles and out-ched sections of the map so that runners have to be extra careful using their compass – something that normally presents no problems in Kolmården since the maps have plenty of details helping the runners:fram:

    Careful using compass…

Wednesday and reporter from "Skogssport" is visiting...

    2009-03-03

A common winter Wednesday at LiU Orienteering includes morning workout with map and the evening workout include VO2-maximum-intervals, also with map – this is also the case this Wednesday when "Skogssport's" Rasmus Westergren is on a visit.

    This morning's training session :

3-6 hill loops, running upwards on time – then downhill map reading, with a tired body and brain. Each loop takes 12-15 min and climb 60 m. Here is seen one och the six loops:

    >Fast upwards and fully concentrated downwards...

    Afternoon training session:

4 city OL-loops – duels in which orienteers run two and two, one in each their direction, and the winner "will go up a division" to meet a new opponent. The purpose of the workout is increasing VO2-max and the development of the ability to make "lightning-fast" routing decisions. Here is seen one och the four loops :

Full speed, one in each direction

    Danes take over...

    2009-02-26

The coaches Peter Öberg and Peter Holgersson are both away this weekend (training camp in Bulgaria and Indoor-SM in athletics) and the Danes Emil Folino and Sigge Lundedal take care of the workouts...

    Saturday, February 28:

Tough ultra-longdistance orienteering (52 controls) – bitwise very hilly to tire legs out and bitwise flat with intensive map reading. Start at 10:00 in Petersburg (Söderköping) and departure from Norrköping 09:40. One minibus from Norrköping and one from Linköping and from places booked by the Danes (Norrk) and Per Carlborg (Link).

Tough hills Intensive map-reading in nice pine forest

    Sunday, March 1:

"Moment course" (ultra long distance) in Ågelsjö mountains – a combination of long distances, curve reading, "follow the height curve", direction running. Start at 10:00 in Little lake cottage (Linn Bränneby has key) and departure from Norrköping 09:40. One minibus from Norrköping and one from Linköping.

The maps are printed on Friday and ordered by Peter Holgersson.

"Urban orienteering and Night Extreme" will be replaced with e.g. NOC 1955

    2009-02-23

    Variation...

As we all notice the evenings are lighter and the boiler lights / map lights are no longer needed. Now there are two remaining Tuesday-city-orienteering (15-17 km and 6-8 controls)(15-17 km och 6-8 kontroller) and one race in the Night Extreme with extra difficult night orienteering. Since Tuesday evenings are filled with long distance orienteering in nice evening light on the various maps. E.g. we run the men's course from NOC 1955 but on av fresh green map at a scale of 1: 50 000.

Frida and her new attack on 3000 m

    2009-02-19

Frida Aspnäs made a new attempt to get under 10:00 on 3000 m. At Thursday's Indoor-DM on Campus Valla she solo-ran the 3000 m with 20 s per hundred meters (beeping watch) but missed the limit by 1 seconds – however, she did beat her personal record with 1 s and this brings her up a position in the indoor statistics. Sadly Frida will miss 3000 m at the Indoor-SM due Holiday with the family and may settle with Indoor-JSM 1500 m in Gothenburg; 3000 m is not in the juniors program indoors.

    Wonderful orienteering weekend

    2009-02-15

2 times 16 km pleasure... A thin snow-covered forest that made everything white, brilliant sunshine and over 30 km orienteering courses in top terrain – this was LiU Orienteering's menu on 14-15:th February. Saturday's corridor course was arranged at Sörsjön Camping Village and Sunday's course was around NAIS' club cabin Bergkulla. The terrain along the course was wonderful the ones who completed the two days courses got 4-5 h intensive map reading in lovely pine forest – a normal weekend with LiU orienteering.

    Ambulance after crash with cactus

    2009-02-14

It was a miserable start of the Spain training camp for Swedish Champion Linnea Lidström; during XI Trofeo Costa Blanca Linnea crashed into a cactus and the 5 cm long tags drilled so deeply into the knee joint that it locked itself. An ambulance journey followed and surgery to get out the tags – also antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicine. The remaining camp days included only light weight training and mapping studies in the sun.

New members of the Elite Group

LiU Elite Sports' head group has after a long meeting decided to adopt three orienteers and two runners ahead of next semester; the large number of members normally means that the requirements for merit increases for future applicants... New orienteers in the elite group are:
  • Erik Liljekvist, OK Älme (JWC-gold in the relay and total victory in Silva Cup 2008)
  • Anton Tynong, Gävle OK (2nd and 3rd in Silva Cup 2008)
  • Jonas Wallin, Vänersborgs SK (6th in long distance and 8th in the middle distance in the Swedish Junior Championships 2008)
  • Orienteers tested track-running

    Nostalgic training

    2009-01-31

At last it was time for a nostalgic training on Risinge peninsula. The course was 15 km long on IFK Norrköping's large and extremely detailed map. It was exciting to see how the map and the terrain had remained, now 30 years after the map was drawn. No revision had been made since then and the forest was still intact... S: t Olof-träffen gathered 2000 orienteers on this legendary map, DC long distance and DC relay was arranged here and Night-NC (!) with many lost night orienteers.

    Soft workout on Lanzarote

    2009-01-16

Week 02 part of LiU Orienteering visited Club la Santa – the famous sports hotel on the northwest of Lanzarote. Training in the beautiful environment contained a mixture of running straight into the desert, mountain-biking, strength-training, track-running and other training.

Half board with buffet morning and evening also enabled effective recovery between training sessions.
