Research supervision – Advanced Course in Higher Education Pedagogy, 4 credits

Course days: October 17-18 + November 15, 2013.

The course is intended for persons who have taken a doctorate and participate as main supervisors or co-supervisors in PhD education processes. In accordance with the LiU Appointment procedure (Ref no. LiU-2012-01933 USP 2012-6.8) the course is compulsory for appointment/promotion to Professor, Reader and/or Associate Professor or to be granted Senior Research Fellow status.

The overall aim of the course is the development of knowledge in the specific field of research supervision, under collegial forms and based on the participants' experience in relation to research/development work in the field. The main purpose of the course is, for the participants, to critically reflect on and develop an understanding of

  • assessment of supervision quality
  • organisational, financial and legal conditions of the supervision process
  • development of productive learning environments
  • preconceptions regarding supervision as practice held by the participants themselves
  • construction of positions as main supervisor, co-supervisor and PhD student, and collaboration between these roles
  • positions regarding ethics and 'Equal Opportunities' (see http://www.liu.se/om-liu/strategi/ett-liu-for-alla/lika-villkor?l=en) in the carrying out of the supervision task
  • development of an individual set of supervision strategies

The course consists of two parts: One cross-faculty part, including the entire university and one faculty-specific part. For the faculty-specific part, please see information to the right.

By usage apply a 'first come, first served' principle, which means that the course can become fully booked before the end of the application period.
