The Graduate School in Language and Culture in Europe
Important areas for research within the Graduate School are interactional linguistics and conversational research; intertextuality, which we understand as the interplay between texts which have a demonstrable and dynamic relationship with each other; translation, both in a literal and a figurative sense (the meeting of cultures); and topolinguistics, the study of the cultural landscape as a condition for and in part a product of language practitioners. An area under development is cultural stylistics, which presupposes collaboration between literary scholars and linguists, for example concerning narration and language variation.

Child Studies
All research at the department involves an interdisciplinary investigation of children and childhood, covering different arenas such as war, welfare, media, children’s visual culture, after school activities, information technology, children’s work, sibling caretaking, organized play practices, family life, school, child care, preschool, fostering, peer play, philanthropy and welfare agencies, family therapy, child psychiatry counselling, family mediation, and youth detention homes. There is a focus on real life issues that matter in applied contexts. At the same time, all research is oriented to contemporary theorizing on childhood and children’s life conditions. Several scholars have been involved in theorizing within sociology of childhood. Other research has been informed by cultural theory, discursive theories and practice based theorizing within the social sciences. Cultural comparative aspects of childhood have been important in historically, as well as anthropologically oriented, work.
Child Studies is connected to the department of Thematic Studies (TEMA).

Technology and Social Change
Many of today’s important social questions concern technology in some way, questions which can be as varied as: Which political processes lay behind nuclear energy policy or the development of biotechnology? How does information technology influence our interpersonal relations and our ways of communicating? How can we deal with the risks and uncertainties of technological development? How does technology shape our identity, our daily life and our concepts of the world?
Technology and Social Change is connected to the department of Thematic Studies.

Technology, Practice, Identity (TPI)
The research programme “Technology, Practice, Identity†is focussed on social interactions and interpretations of identities and practices in relation to technology. We study how different understandings of technology are created and how technology is used and developed within different settings and social groups. Various environments are studied, such as laboratories, courts, hospitals, transport systems, professional training, the military, and online communities. The programme has a strong tradition of qualitative inquiry of science and technology, especially ethnographic studies. While many studies therefore have a micro perspective we also study social networks and political movements, as well as gender structures and social and cultural changes over time.
TPI is connected to the department of Thematic Studies.

Technology, Everyday Life, Society (TEVS)
Technology, Everyday Life, Society (TEVS) is researching the ways in which energy systems impact on and are used in daily life, with a focus on the development, planning and execution of various infrastructure systems. The research addresses technology in daily life and in society, with an emphasis on society at the local and regional levels. The starting point is that both human activities and the technological and institutional landscape play a role in people’s daily lives as well as in various professional fields, such as property management, energy consulting and regional planning. The research is being conducted from various theoretical perspectives, with the concepts of household, innovation, planning, policy, system and everyday life being problematized.

Technology and Learning
The research area Technology and Learning examines the relationship between technology and learning techniques based on sociological and educational perspectives. The educational system is one of the social fields where the meeting of new technologies and social inertia is made clear. The area is very wide and requires an interdisciplinary field of inquiry where technology is problematized. The area of research is thus rooted in a tradition where technologies such as information and communications technologies (ICT), are studied in time and space with a focus on learning in the education sector. This means that the technology’s framework and its social context is crucial. Research and researchers within the program have their roots in the pedagogy, sociology, anthropology, computer education, journalism and informatics as well as several different institutional affiliations.
Technology and Learning is connected to the department of Thematic Studies.
