Cognitive science at Linköping University

The Cognitive Science programme combines theory and methodology strands with more practical and adaptable course elements. The core element is the theory of cognitive science and the auxiliary elements are Psychology, Linguistics and Computer Science.

Psychology involves the study of how people perceive and interpret their surroundings, solve problems and make decisions. Linguistics looks at how languages are built up and how they are used for communication purposes in different situations and cultures.

Computer Science looks, amongst other things, at artificial intelligence and the various applications for which computer systems and services can be used.

Another important element in the programme looks at the different ways used to design and carry out various types of investigations, psychological experiments, data collection and analysis of interviews and conversations.

Students also learn about programming so as to be able to create models of computer thought processes and language, or to improve user interface models.

Theory and methodology are integrated subjects within the project and essay work. Some examples of the kind of projects in which students may be involved include the control of a cursor on computer screens via the brain, cooking aids for people with Alzheimer’s disease, computer aids for writing messages which are easy to read, communication in emergency situations onboard passenger vessels and the development and assessment of systems with a focus on the interaction between people and technology.
